Modifying the air intake...questions

I've been thinking a lot lately about changing a bunch of stuff in the airbox system in my bird. What I plan on doing is removing that secondary air box (the one that attaches to the rad, and does nothing but cut airflow) and redoing the whole intake to consist of: K&N filter, MAF, Throttle body. I'll use some straight plastic pipe stuff to join them. Has anyone done anything like this? If so, have they had any problems? Thanks for any input.

I plan on doing something like that sometime. Anyone know what that box between the MAF and throttle body does?

Yeah, I do. It wastes space, adds weight to your car, costs $$$, and restricts airflow. Seriously, though, I think it's supposed to muffle the noise of the air intake. Screw that, I WANT cool intake noise.

Yeah, I'm quite sure it's useless. I've had it off, opened it up, and seen that it's just a bunch of baffles and ****. Come to think of it, though, it may have something to do with preventing water from getting to your TB, but I'm sure you'll find a way around it...best of luck, and I'll let ya know how my mod goes when I do it. Uhmm.. they wouldn't put a water stopper between your MAF and TB.. that's just silly.. any water blocks are going to be before the filter.. once it makes it to the MAF you're gonna have more problems than a little wet engine (shorts in MAF, MAF fries, ECM might fry, nearby circuits might fry, time to either go replacing a whole buncha schtuff or get a carb) so.. uhmm.. actually I think it's their cheap attempt at getting air to make a decently smooth 90* turn (if this is the piece I'm thinking of).. decent exhaust piping will do the job quite well, and polished will look an awful lot better (personal thought, accuracy not garaunteed).

There might be a little longer delay than expected on making my own intake. I've decided to fix the rust and get a new coat of paint, one WITH a clear coat. I still may do it anyway since it's kinda cheap. But, do keep me posted on any problems that may come up.
