I was talking to my car the other day (86 2.8l) and it told me to check the MAP sensor... it would tell me what it is or where it is though. Could you guys help me out?
When i start my car it starts at 10rpm then shoots up to 20rpm and goes back down to around 7 rpm and the check engine soon light comes on.

Actually, you don't have a MAP sensor. Was the error code 33 or 34? That's the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. You didn't say if you have a Camaro or Firebird, so I can't tell you 100% exactly where it is, but it's easy to find. Just look at the air intake tube coming off your throttle body. It's the sensor (with a 3-pin connector) betwen that intake tube and your air filter box. New from GM is about $300; a Pep Boys or Strauss or etc "lifetime replacement" one is about $80-$100. Definately get the lifetime'r... it'll be worth it in the long run.

I have a camaro... and it does say MAP according to the error code charts.
33 (three flashes, pause, three flashes) MAP sensor Check vacuum hose(s) from MAP sensor. Check electrical connections at ECM. *Replace MAP sensor
Could it be a typo? I am refering from the Haynes auto repair manual for thirdgen camaros

Okay, don't believe me, then! You'll spend a lonnnnng time looking for the MAP sensor, though. 
[edit] If by some chance I was right, and you do have a MAF sensor, then your Camaro would have it placed right between your Y-shaped (dual-snorkel) airbox and the throttle body's intake tubing.

TomP is absolutely correct if that is the original engine for your car...its a MAF sensor as 2.8s were MAF cars until they changed over to SD (MAP based) in 1989 or 1990.
GM just reused the codes for the MAF system on the MAP system (no need to reserve MAF codes when you don't have MAF/so GM reused them)...so the code book is for a 89/90 and newer car.
If you are STILL in doubt, trace your intake from the air cleaner to the Throttle Body and you will see a "device" somewhere in between...that's the MAF.
As I said, the ONLY way you could have a MAP/SD engine, is if someone replaced it with a newer engine.

Just a support post to what's already been stated.. in '86 our cars had MAF sensors, not MAP sensors.. same trouble code, just a different sensor per model (85-89 2.8l MPFI uses Mass AirFlow, 90-92 3.1l MPFI uses Manifold Absolute Pressure (superior system, aka speed density))

the haynes manual says maf sensor in the updated chapter (supplement for 1985 and newer models) (chapter 13 in the firebird manual) and in (i think) chapter 6 - emission controls it says map sensor
