Timing chain replacement on 3.1 ?
Timing chain replacement on 3.1 ?
I was reading that you have to take the oil pan off to replace the timming chain because of the cover. That seems to be a very big pain in the A$$! Can anyone give me any specifics? I would really appreciate any help. Is there any thing else I should replace while in there.

no, there is no need to loosen the pan. the timing chain cover consists of like 4 or 6 bolts and it just slides right out. if you choose to do this, take my word: REPLACE THE TENSIONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Dan's got it real right!
I swapped the chain.
Take off water pump, take off timing chain cover. Get a timing chain gasket set from Pep Boys, use Fel Pro gasket kit.
OR call these guys, 800-831-0884 Northern Auto Parts. I had everything deliverd to my door for about $50, chain, gaskets, not my labor!!
Balancer, go get/borrow the proper balancer puller from an auto parts store. Be careful pulling balancer, get the engine at #1 Top Dead Center first, then go to work.
BE REAL CAREFUL with the bolts into the timing chain cover. Go slow and make sure they are threaded correctly, don't strip them.
Use plenty of RTV black or Red on all seals!!
Watch out for stuff falling into oil pan, cover that hole!
