Rear Main Problem?

Does anyone that has a 2.8 have a rear main leak? I have had 2, an 88 and an 89, and they both started leaking at 150k miles. My friend had an 86 that leaked also. Anyone else think this is an inherant problem?

It may not be the mains...it may be the rear cam button seal...

It might also be the 1-inch-inside-diameter O-ring seal on the distributor shaft. The rubber o-ring hardens up over time, and loses it's sealing ability. It mimicks a rear-main seal leak, too- the oil runs down the back of the block and around the rear of the crank.

I could've sworn I had a rear main leak; I even pulled the flexplate inspection cover to see oil around the back of the crank. My mechanic told me (after he was trying to diagnose my no-start problem by rebuilding the distributor) that he fixed my oil leak- and he showed me a very-cracked & brittle o-ring. Sure enough, the leak was gone!

You can buy a 5-pack of 1 inch I.D o-rings from Pep Boys or AutoZone or etc... look for where they have their metal drawers in the aisles; usually by the nuts & bolts. Or a "real" parts store will have their own O-ring assortment behind the counter, and can give you an o-ring for $0.50 or so.
