Ignition Control Module?

tomP through this one out, and it seems a very likely cause of what's happening with my bird, as I'm definately not getting spark now, but plenty o' fuel (engine belched after cranking for 10-15 seconds, cloud of very mixed gas and air shot out the MAF and floated across the driveway).

Question: When an Ignition Control Module goes, isn't it a pretty immediate death to the vehicle? Mine sputtered around quite a bit and limped home in high RPM's... IS there any way for this to still be the ICM? Does the fact that I have an Accel 300+ Multispark system possibly explain that it would keep running roughly without the ICM? Any help, please...

check the dist itself. When mine went, had similat symptoms. There was too much play in the dist and the engine wasnt getting any spark.

OK had his prob wth my 3.1 a while back....there is a 4 prong module in the dist that is a pain to get out and back in but if juice does not come out of there then no spark. Get a circuit tester and check the prongs, they come out the passenger side of the distributer.

When my ICM went bad I got zero spark. You could take it to auto parts store and have them test it.

I cannot explain your problem.
BUT if you think it may be....
Pull out dist, rebuild it.
real simple. Knock out pin, pull a part, clean with sandpaper, brake cleaner, regrease shft, put in new electronics, then slip back in, using a chevy small block dist. gasket.
Go get anaaccel remote mount coil.
That's what I use & it runs great!
I'm using my old one from my S-10 Blazer with over 100,000 on it. I've had it for over 10 years. My orig. coil went. I junked that thing.

Well, it's not quite an instant death. The car will run fine until the module heats up. Then the module dies, and will work again after it cools.

Check into buying a performance module from someone like Holley or Accel- you'll pay the same price for a regular replacement module. If you have to get one quick though, you might want to get an AC Delco one. I have a Borg Warner one on mine now ($10 more than the Holley, dammit! I didn't know about the performance one), but went through two Standard modules over 4 years. This BW one has lasted since '98; lets see how long it goes!

The accel one can be found by checking out Accel's catalog from http://www.mrgasket.com . It's either 35362 or 35363... I had it written down somewhere around here, but can't find it. The Holley one is I think #891-103 (here's a link to it):

http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...A/891-103.html

If I dig up the right accel one this weekend, I'll hop back on and let you know. Funny how Accel doesn't spec any module for the 2.8's ... yet we use the same spark module as the remote-coil V8's. (You can verify it yourself by checking out a V6 module against a V8 module through http://www.carparts.com. Concentrate on the AC Delco modules, and make sure you get a remote-coil, fuel injected application V8. Some in-cap V8's used a 4-pin module that us V6 guys won't have.)

In fact, hopefully, you can search this board, and you'll find my outbreak about the Holley module & Accel modules. I think I listed part #'s. Ouch- okay- stop bending my arm! Here's the only link I could find (Looked for "module" and "TomP"): https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/000069.html I could've sworn I wrote out part #'s, but can't find it.
