Re: running valves?

If you actually mean that you want to know how to set the valve lash, you clean the pushrods until they're not greasy anymore and then set the engine to #1 top center (#1 pushrods fully retracted, valves closed). Any valve that doesn't have the pushrod extended compared to the rest (lifter opening valve) gets tightened until there is no vertical play in the pushrod (you'll feel the difference... Try to avoid using a ratchet on this as it's less accurate) plus 3/4 turn. Turn the crank over 1 full turn to #4 TDC and tighten the rest.

Re: running valves?

yeah, i made the mistake of tightening them down when i got the valves off because i remembered when i rebuilt my buddys lt1 he tightened his down that way, but since i had to remove the rods anyways to replace the lower intake manifold gaskets i need to run the valves to get them right again. also my step dad said he had to have the car running to be able to do this? correct? or do i get the same effect doing it the way you explained?

Re: running valves?

Don't run the engine to tighten the valves. You'll be working in an oily cloud because the oil that squirts out of the pushrods WILL end up all over the exhaust manifolds. And besides, you'd have to take the whole top end apart to put the valve covers back on anyways.
