Engine running hot.
Engine running hot.
before i installed my 180* thermo in idol my car would move up just above 220* then the fan would kick on and cool it down, i installed a 180* thermo and it does the same thing, it won't kick on any cooler whats up with that, maybe my guage is broken, because when it was reading 220 i felt the top of the engine, which most of the time will get really hot, and it was still cooler, i could lay my head on it and it wouldn't hurt(i didn't, i'm not that stupid), but is it my gauge or whats up. thanks, later

the fan is gonna come on at 227 degrees no matter what thermostat is in. if you let your car idle, the temp will keep rising until the fan kicks in. with a colder thermo, the temp is still gonna rise, just not quite as fast. hmmm, does that make sense?? i'm really bad at explaining things.

When idling there's no way to keep the car's temp from rising. Air isn't flowing over the radiator unless A: the car is moving, or B: the fan is on. The fan doesn't kick on till the ECM tells it to. The EPROM in your ECM has that tempterature set internally, thus the only way to kick your fan on before 227 is to change that value in the EPROM (or manually wire the fan.. but that can be hazardous if you forget to turn it on/off). All the thermostat controls is when water actually flows through the radiator (with a 180 thermostat, when the water temperature inside the engine reaches 180 degrees, the thermostat should be at wide open, allowing alot of water to flow through the radiator).
