BAD idle, hellllpp, threw a code 42

Engine: LS1 - 346 ci
Transmission: 4L60E
BAD idle, hellllpp, threw a code 42
today my dad started the car and it idled really bad. so we drove it for about 5 or 6 miles. he sed the SES lite came on rite after he started it and it idle REALLY Badly. i read the haynes manual but i dunno what to do, im lost. i cleared the ECM after we got back and it didnt throw the 42 again but it still idles really badly... please help... thanx guys

42.. did you set the timing lately? That's the error code for the EST (electronic spark timing). It usually appears after you set timing, since the EST-bypass connector gets unhooked. If I remember, I'll check my GM book tonight for the chart for you.

do u think this may have something to do w/ the distributor o-ring replacement i did a few months back? ill borrow my grandpa's timing lite this friday to see. thanx again

if the comp s saying 42(EST) then you need to disconnect this little brown/tan wire and reset the timing. My guess is that when you put on the light it will be fine when it idle surges up to around 2500rpms the timing will retard enough to smooth out. Otherwise you are in the neihborhood of 30 something degrees advanced...and yes it will run like shi*. I went through this with my 92 V6 and after I got it back from a local shop it ran like crap...I reset the timing and will never go to that shop again. Thats what I get for tring to save a little time by not doing it myself...
