MAF screen?
MAF screen?
I heard that taking out the MAF screen would increase power. so i took the screen out and i seem to have a little better acceleration but it will idle a little low now, not all the time but sometimes when the engine is still cold but it will also do it when the engine is hot just not as often. does anybody know why it does this?

There was a post a while back explaing why not to do that. It dosent really do much for your car at al. I never did it because i have speed density. But if you ever need to buy a new maf ill take our old one off you for bucks.

This is generally more of a v8 mod than a 6 mod.. we really don't flow that much air through our MAFs.. I suppose you might gain 1 hp.. and lose 2 hp through the decreased accuracy of your MAF readings thanks to the lower air velocity over the filiment. I've pulled this trick myself before, but it's always proven itself to be more of a hassle than anything once my car started dying at red lights.

When I removed my screen, my car actually set the service engine soon light, and gave me the error code "MAF- low air flow". Seems the crappy intake on my Firebird needs the screen in. My GM book says that the screen is there to "smooth airflow over the sensor".
On the stock intake, before my MAF sensor, is a 30 degree angled duct. I imaging that without the screen, airflow was shooting around the edge of the MAF because of the angled duct. (Think of a car entering a turn at the center, and leaving the turn closest to the outer edge.) Because airflow was going around the center of the MAF (where the orange frequency-film resides), the MAF was reading a low airflow. With the screen back in, the error code went away.
I had intended to remove my MAF screen with my home-made intake, since the MAF is now on a "straight" path on the intake tubing, but never got around to it.
