As far as I know, there's no timing gears available. There's no such thing as a roller gear; only roller chains. A roller chain produces less friction than a normal chain. The only dual-roller chain available for our 2.8/3.1 motors is the Cloyes one, it cost me $90 from Summit Racing.
If you want some whine, you could put on some aftermarket rear gears.. I hear the Richmonds have some whine to them.

Any power gains from changing it out to a new one? I've got 192k on my current timing chain. thanks.

You get a bit. A newer chain will give you back your "accurate timing". An old chain gets stretched out, and can throw off your timing a couple degrees.
The roller chain cuts down on friction- and as a result, won't be so quick to stretch. You'll get maybe 2-3 HP out of it at high rpm's. After doing my chain, the car felt "zippier". I'm sure most of the zip came from accurate timing. I bought the best just because I wanted it; you should see the same gain for less cost with a stock chain.
Oh- the Cloyes comes with the chain and both sprockets for $90. When my friend did his 2.8's chain, the Pep Boys guy told him $20 for the chain. That didn't include either sprocket! I think the full "stock" set was $60... [edit] I should probably add this to cover my butt- Don't quote me on that "stock set" price.

cool... so does it matter if its roller or not? by the way, are our chains the same as the ones on small block v8's? say a 305 or so? just wondering... cuz i really want timing gears if possible.

summit racing has gears. they only list V8 applications in the catalog, but you should at least call to ask if they carry them

Three types of chains.
Link belt, used by the majority of engines.
They last the longest.
Roller chain, stretches easy, but, rolls easier, may gain a few HP
Then the belts, like on Hondas
Can get gears, but, to stressful on the engine. Engines need a shock absorber like a car. The chain accomplishes that mission.
Small Block V-8 chain does not work in out 60 degree application.

Hi Tom.
I got my information from the engineers at TRW, the guys that supply the parts to the big 3.
He explained that the link timing belt, has more guts, to it, unlike the roller chain, which is your bicycle chain. Less guts, to it.
The chain stretches easier.
BUT BUT
You loose about 2-3 HP with the link belt design, but gain it back in length (miles) of timing accuracy.
Which is why you see those link chain belts on the V-8, etc, when ya remove them, first time. They are also more silent, quieter, than the roller chains design.

Hm, interesting... these links I dug up through yahoo.com also say a roller chain produces less stretch. Technically mine's a dual roller; maybe the TRW guy was talking about single roller chains?

The only tip-off is that when you buy a timing chain set for a 2.8/3.1 v6, it has a different part # then that of a 5.0/5.7 V8. So the reasoning goes, if a V8 timing chain won't fit a V6, then a V8 timing gear won't fit a V6.
Plus we've got that odd-ball timing cover... I hate scraping that damn thing.
