If I remember correctly, a long block is the entire bottom end plus heads and an intake manifold. I THINK!!!!
A short block is the bottom end with no heads or intake manifold.
Just call it whichever one depending on what it came with. Since most of the guys on here are getting engines from the junkyard, I would assume they are pulling the entire thing, not just the short block, hence the name long block. Please correct if I am wrong!!!

exactly. most of these guys are buying 3.4 long blocks and just swapping the intake and plenum. a short block just consists of the block and *maybe* the rotating assembly.....not sure.

It is simply like this.
A Short block is just the bottom end.
The block, crank, rods, cam, piston.
Long block is everything else, included.
You specify exactly what one needs wants with that response.
I want a long block including the oil pan, starter, intake & fuel injectors.
I did not create the term, it has been passed down from a long time, guys & others, dealing with the wrecking yards.
Kinda like a two piece & three piece suit.

yeah, my 2.8L (3.0L) came as a long block, with heads (suposedly bored), motor (bored .040), Pistons (enlarged to fit bore, .040 over), oil pan and pump. The guys used my plenum, and cleaned my injectors, along with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. But yeah, a short block will give you a motor with no heads, oil pump or pan, sometimes no manifold or intake, etc. It's just a block with everything taken off. Oh, have u guys ever seen a 2.8L stripped down to nothing, they're small as hell.

The 3.4 is the same thing, stripped. Tiny.
A short block will also include the timing chain, too.
Almost always will.
BUT not the timing chain cover!
IF in doubt, always ask!!

Short Block vs Long Block is not so cut and dry either.
Depends on who you're talking to. Short block USUALLY mean Block and rotating assy.
Long block usually means Block, Heads, Intake, Oil Pan, Timing chain cover, and valve covers.
HOWEVER, recently I was pricing motors from Auto Zone and others and their "Long Blocks" didnt come w/ valve covers, oil pan, or timing chain covers (much less the intake). SOOOOOO, its kinda like ordering a Sundae. Depending on who you talk to, you may or may not get the extras.

Yeah, when we did the heads on that 2.8, it looked so small sitting there. I gotta finish the roll of film so I can get them developed...

Getting the engine from the yard is always easy as they are lazy & do not want to remove lots of stuff (intake exhaust starter, etc)
Again, if in doubt, ask!!
Then, barter.
