The future Mrs.Smith had the AC recharged in my 89 for Fathers day. She bought the 13R kit from Wal mart and had her dad do it while I was out of town. The AC works great. It'll freeze your nuts off.
On 95 degree days with the AC on my temp will keep raising. Wednesday,going to work my temp reached 220. I have 15 miles to work.2 miles of that are in town. I have a 180 thermo to drop in when I can get off my *** to do it. I also thought about some sort of additive for the coolent that promises to lower the coolent temp by 40 degrees. I know the 180 thermo will probably have no effect to the temp with the AC. But I'm going to install it anyway. Anyone have any ideas as to what to do? Or what could cause this problem? As soon as I turn the AC off the temp comes down.

Try that thermostat, since the A/c puts a higher load on the engine your thermo may not be working correctly..BTW, the coolant additive. Is is water wetter or the royal purple stuff? The purple stuff is the only thing that actually works..

i think 8 bucks..its in a bottle, with bright purple stuff in it. I put a bottle in every month during summer..

Education time.
The AC condensor is a heat exchange.
It collects the hot air, that air is forced back (by air flow management) over/into the radiator (which is why it's infront of the radiator), which is why your temps rise when the AC system is on & it lowers when the AC is switrched off.
I'll bet the electric fan is on all the time when you use the AC, right?

Check hoses (especially the bottom one!) and add radiator coolant to help. Install the correct temp thermostat.

So this purple stuff helps?
