2.8 Camaro vs Monte SS- is it possible?

Just wondering something. My friends got a 87 Monte SS w/ 305, not much mods except for Flowmasters, no tail pipes, I think 3.73 posi rear (I know he's got a posi rear), and turbo 350 tranny.

With enough mods, is it possible to take him w/ a 2.8 automatic Camaro?

Another question- if the 2.8's never came w/ posi, how do I explain the two tire strips in my back yard?

Not sure stock if ya could, they're heavy cars. I do know i had an 84 Monte SS, we pulled the 305 and put a carbed 350 in it. It was modded and FAST as HELL. Never timed it but i hung with a 69 camaro at a stop light. The guy claimed to run 13.5's to 13.75's and he was surprised a Monte hung with him. I would imagine a stock Monte would be like running against a stock 305 firebird, depends on driver, launch and driver skill. I have hung with afew and lost to most, after 50 it is all over for me against em. A modded 2.8 against a stock monte? heheh let us know

As far as the two strips, i beleive, altho i am prolly wrong, most likely you hit it when both tires had no traction and the clutches engauged enough to allow both wheels to spin. Rarely on my 91 i will get two strips, mostly tho it is the right rear that will spin. Only other explaination is you have posi.

on loose surfaces its possible to get an open rearend to make "make two strips", but you do not have a posi by any means. Ive heard of guys at the track setting up their cars with airbags and the like so that each tire has the same amount of grip and they can launch low 12 sec cars on an open rearend.
About you beating the monte......I doubt youll be able to, hes probably about a second faster than you.....why does he have a TH350? those cars came with TH200R-4's stock.

The original tranny blew, so instead of rebuilding it he got hold of a new turbo 350 and threw that in.

And there has to be some way that I can tke him with enough mods to the v6. Other than tc's, sc's or NOS.

I raced an 86 SS or something like it. It was one of my friends I hadn't seen in awhile. He asked me what I had, I told him V6, he smiled and said "Yeah, I'll race ya!" I asked hime and he had a carbed 350 w/ Turbo 350 tranny. He had two other people in his car (one of which a nice blonde...) and when we took off he was a little behind me and then started pulling up to me around 40 mph. Then we had to hit the brakes. He said he was surprised I did so well, and complimented me on the sound of my engine, then he turned onto another street. If the race would've gone any farther, I would've gotten killed. But hey, it was fun!

The advantage I have is my friend's only got the stock 305. Even if I do get my @$$ whipped, it will still be fun. But I would like to know if it's possible to beat him. The look on his face would be priceless!

Do a full tune up, fill your tank with mid-grade fuel and injector cleaner, get it down to an 1/8th of a tank (very important), ditch ALL extra weight (back of rear seats, tire, jack, clean out the interior), and try and make sure he's got a full tank and his engine's been running for a while, and yours is cold, then you should surprise him pretty good.

The fuel thing will make a big difference, I'll let mine sit at an 8th all summer long, only putting in $2 or $3 at a time just so I can haul @$$ whenever necassary. As for the engine temp, ever notice how it pulls a lot harder first thing in the morning? Use it to your advantage, do it after school or something, and make him drive over to where you're parked to start with, then start talking shop while the roads clear out a bit, make him turn his off for a few minutes (it'll heat up even more while it sits), then start it again a few minutes later.

This is, of course, in an ideal setting, but if you can pull it off, you'll at least keep up.

I think you should be able to hold your own for a while but he'll wind up taking you if you race past 1/8 mile i've raced many V8's with my 2.8 firebird and was able to keep up for a little while my best racing was from 40 and punch it down the highway. Anyway tell us how everything goes. Hope you have fun.

i think it's possible to take him, hopefully though his car isn't running mint, if so you'll have your hands full. Before the original board went down there was a guy on here with a LG4 Monte SS, and he was impressed with our v6 1/4 times, cause we were about a .10 second slower than him. While others on this board were already running times faster. I'd expect a stock 305LG4 in a monte to pull off about a 17 in the 1/4, which isn't all that special, and can be done with the v6 fbodies too. I'm not sure of the weight difference in the cars, but my friends 87 Elcamino with a 305 LG4, was a good match for my firebird. No one ever gained any room, all he had was a good launch because of his low end tq, but i never lost any more ground past the ft. i lost off the line. Keep us posted, i'm interested in the outcome. and good luck.

I have an 83 Monte Carlo SS and consider myself a bit of an expert on Montes. (This is in addition to my 88 IROC L98)

As a point of reference:

ALL Monte Carlos SS's (83-88) came from the factory with the L69 305HO with a 4 bbl carb.

I struggle to believe that a stock 2.8 Camaro will run with a stock Monte. While the Monte does weight more - it doesn't weight THAT much more than a Camaro.

If the 2.8 Camaro wins, either something is wrong with the Monte or the Monte driver. Other than that - I just can't see it happening.

Don't get me wrong, my IROC will spank my SS, but we're talk 5.7 TPI here, not 2.8 MPI.

Yea the Motes are not a 17 Sec car. Besides He started off with a 195 HP say take 20 away for age on the engine, now add 10-40 more back for mods, Then consider hes Got a posi 3.73 to what ever you got. Your not takin him off the line He will launch way better than you, if he can drive, then thanks to the added power and lower gear he will acclerate faster to. Hey have fun anything can happen, hell one of his plugs may foul in the middle of the race and you would win, or even better he might blow a tire or have a wheel fall off. Just race and see. That is why I would never race Title for Title, to many things can happen..

I know a stock 2.8 would never take a monte ss, I was asking if WITH ENOUGH MODS a 2.8 could take my friend's monte ss.

Why dont you drop in a 3.4L? It would give you an edge. And with some mods on that you might could take him. But with the 2.8L...I dunno.

I beg to differ. Like I said, I raced my friend's Monte SS and he had a 350. I killed him off the line. Granted, he would kill me on top end. He probably doesn't know how to drive his car well, but still, it doesn't take much to mash your foot to the floor (and no, his tires didn't spin, and neither did mine). So in this case, he did not win off the line.

stock no, but with the right mods, possibly including a few more cubic inches you should be able to run with him.. as far as all v6's not having posi i beg to differ, my car has the stock rear, and it is a posi unit..

Mikes86SC - your point is well taken. I did not respond to the real question. With enough mods, could a 2.8MPI Camaro beat a stock Monte SS. Sure. How much do you want to spend and how long should the motor last? The real question is whether it is worth it to put that much money into that engine or simply get a new one. I used to have a Fiero 2M6 with that same motor. I loved that car. Stock versus stock, it could beat the Monte (but it was close) - I put them head-to-head back in the mid-1980's. For this reason, the added weight of the Camaro would likely change the outcome.

As far as the other Monte comments are concerned - the reality is that that L69 is not enough motor for the Montes. For this reason, you will encounter very few stock Montes (I have one of the few stock examples). Always keep this in mind when you decide to run against one. You can always hope for someone who did mods and screwed the car up and made it slower.

Vortex, I am not doubting what you say about the Monty you ran. I am just saying that Montes are not 17 sec. cars from the factory. They are a little faster than that, all beit not much though. As far as getting off the line I was talking about the particular race at hand. I doubt that the Monte you ran had 3.73 gears. I know some of them cae with the dreaded 2.73. Which in an heavy car that is slightly underpowered can make it a real dog off the line and not affect it that much at top end. A 3.73 gear helps more in a heavier car because of the Torque multiplication. Yes it helps lighter cars to, but you can tell it more in a heavier car.

My enemy has a monte with 105,000 miles and my modded 2.8 spanked him, all my friends mockedme for buying a six but they were surpised. But my baby is dead, she is on life support in my garage, she is awaiting a 3.4 for GM perfromance parts. then I will show all those monte boys.

Ok I will settle this right now my girlfriend's dad has an 88 Monte SS and I have an 87 firebird 2.8 MPFI. We raced last night in the 1/4 and I beat him by half a car length. Now mind you my car isn't stock last time I was on the dyno i had 153 hp and 161 ft/lbs.

baller - since you do not specify your mods, I cannot directly comment. It is quite possible that you beat this SS. However, I stand by my previous statement:

"If the 2.8 Camaro wins, either something is wrong with the Monte or the Monte driver." To further clarify this, if there isn't something wrong with the monte/monte driver, then you have some serious mods on your car.

Congratulations on a very impressive kill.

The only mod he has is glass packs and megatones. It was a nice kill but I think my future father-in-law is upset about it now so I think he is going to stick some money into his car now.

If the car only has the mods described, tell your future father-in-law to spend money on driving instruction instead of mods to the car. He'll get more bang for the buck learning how to drive.

No a "flame", just a genuine recommendation.

2.8 vs Monte SS?? Hell, I can answer this one....I DID beat him.

When mine was bone-stock, I raced him flat-out for almost a mile alongside a reservoir out in the boonies. At the end, I know I was going over 100, and I had a car length on him. It was an easy race, both of us just floored and held on.

Now granted, I should not have been able to beat him. A stock Monte SS like his does 0-60 in 7.5, while mine is about 10.5. An L69 305 SS is not as slow as everyone seems to think they are. And by the way, the L69 in those was rated for 180hp.

Baller, you said "small camshaft"- which camshaft do you have? Who made it, and what are the specs? Did you change it yourself? I'm researching 2.8 camshafts (none seem to be emissions legal), and appreciate any info you can give me.

Thanks!

Unfortunately this race won't happen. My friend is swapping in a 350 as we speak. And I aint even gonna try to beat that.

I've beat quite a few V8's myself. Of course, these were 70's and 80's V8's, when they were basically crap. I mean cmon, a 305 making 170 horses? Those 6.6 liter V8's out of the 70's TA's only made 190 some odd horses. Lots of people think their V8 can stomp anything. Truth is, they better think twice. So when I hear "305 TBI", I say bring it on! Payce.
