Yes.
Do you want to repair it correctly, or just stop the leak for a few months?
If the latter, then just drain a couple gallons of coolant from the system, then clean that up really good, then use a lot of JB Kwik and goop it all the way around. Let it sit overnight, then refill and enjoy.

Re: 3.1 coolant leak, help please

looks like the gasket between the timing cover and block or water pump to timing cover. It is not hard to repair. My old Firebird use to do it. Had to replace the gasket twice in three years. Just make sure you have a good set of Torx sockets. I believe they are in the water pump and timing cover on those engines. Its been awhile since I drove a V6.

LOL! thats the name of the tool "easy out". it is like a drill bit but the blades are backwards. Just go to any autoparts store and tell them you need one. I think they can loan it too you. Also, Sears sells them.

Re: 3.1 coolant leak, help please

Hey Guys

I've got the same leaking issue on my '1990 3.1 V6 and I would like to fix it.
What kind of gasket is there in place? Can I replace it like using a new O-ring rubber gasket?
I hope my english is not too bad...

Thanks.

Re: 3.1 coolant leak, help please

It's a quick disconnect that GM used back then. They used them on the fullsize pickups too. They frequently cause problems. So much so that any autoparts store worth it's salt will have the fitting and the extractor needed to remove the old broken fitting, on the shelf.

The "fix" is to replace the quick disconnect with a heater hose barb fitting, and a few inches of heater hose with a couple clamps.

Oh, that's what it is. Had to replace mine on my pickup. OEM made of Chinesium. I found a better made replacement at Advance Auto.

Re: 3.1 coolant leak, help please

Replacing the fitting with a new quick disconnect will work if the mating end of the hard pipe is in good enough condition to seal. It's not terrible unusual for the pipe to rust. That's why I suggest using a barbed fitting, heater hose, and a couple clamps. They will seal, and it won't fail again in the life of the car.

Can you send me a link or a number which I can use for example on rockauto.com to order that part? It's hard to get stuff like that in europe with imperial threads. Thanks.
That would definitely fix the issue for at least 20 years.

Re: 3.1 coolant leak, help please

Search for pipe fitting union. I did some searching and came up with a few other options. I don't know your exact sizes of pipe thread and hose size, so you will have to make the choice. Looking at your picture, it seems that a 90 degree fitting might work better, but I don't know if you have the clearance to thread it in. Good luck.
