How hard is rebuilding an alternator? Mine doesn't charge anymore, and I really dont wanna drop $100 or more for a new, err, rebuilt one. TIA

Buy a new one. I priced one for mine, and it was $175 or $185 with a five year warranty.

If you rebuild it yourself it might be worth it, but if you have a shop do it, it will be maybe $10 less than buying a new one.

How hard is it, it just involves patients.
Good luck,

i bought a AC delco remanufactured for $92 last week. 1 year warranty. but if you have the money, its best to buy a new one with a 5 year. ac delco puts out so much power, and it ends up burning out the internal voltage regulator faster than all other alltenators.

Do you have a part number for the one you bought for $100 or so?

I'm running the Pep Boys's "Gold" alternator... gold because it cost so damn much. The great thing is, it's got a lifetime warrantee! I manage to bring the thing back every 2 or 3 years, and they just give me a new one! Talk about a great investment... the price killed me at the time, but man, I'm so thankful I did it.

I have heard that your Alternator is NOT REBUILDABLE.
It is (obviously) but, you cannot not come by the rebuild kit.
SO, prove us all wrong & start phoning around for the rebuild kit!
ALSO CHECK YOU WIRE CONNECTIONS!!
Solder them if need to!

It was over $100, but it wasn't past $150... and that was back in '95. If you hit Pep Boys (or similar) for such a deal, make sure you have them switch the pulleys & fan on you if you need to. I've never gotten an alternator from them that had the correct pulley & fan. If they complain they can't do it, all they need is someone from the shop with an impact wrench- it takes -maybe- 2 minutes.

UPDATE: I found a Lifetime Warranty receipt from Trak Auto and Kragen replaced it for FREEEEE!! I think the 36 month warranty on the new one will work cuz i know this alternator will die on me! Must be my stereo.

You can rebuild the alternator.
You'll need a soldering iron and the correct inverted torx bit to open it. Anyway you have to heat up the old soldered connections, solder in the new ones, and bolt it all up. Also the kit comes with bearings that you'd need to press in. I rebuilt the alternator in our IROC, the kit replaces everythign EXCEPT the regulator, which apparantly was the problem in the IRoc since it still didn't work. Not really worth the effort, just get a delco alternator and be done with it.

well you can always get a MR. Amp alt and be done with it. get a 140 amp from them and I think it has a lifetime warranty on it. And IT will make a big difference.

You can always have a friend on the inside do it for free.We made a deal,he rebuilt my alt,now works flawlessly.I bored out his cylinders by .030 and we called it even. This is the cheapest way I can think of doing money eating repairs, favor for a favor.
