A/C Compressor Vibrates
Hey guys, i noticed the other day my a/c comp vibrates a LOT at idle when its on only, when you rev the engine, the vibration goes away. What does this mean? Is it going bad? It still works but once the engine speed is slowed down, the air doesnt stay cold, and when the engine speed goes up, it gets cold again. TIA

How's the belt? Could it be loose/worn/slipping/etc?

Any mounting bolts loose? Is the engine out of tune (and struggling when the a/c's on at idle)?

actually it does struggle a little when at idle, but then the engine speed rises to comensate (i guess cause of the computer)

I thought I'd mention that I'm having an almost identical problem. I own a 1991 Camaro RS and whenever I idle and turn the AC on, I get a massive amount of vibration that runs through the car...shakes my mirrors, vibrates through the floor, the shifter..everything. WHen I go into Neutral, the vibration lessens, and when I turn the a/c off or switch to vents, the vibration completely goes away. When I begin to accelerate, the car performs normally...it's only at idle speed that I get the vibration. Also, when the AC is on, the engine hesitates to accelerate...you press the pedal and the car lurches forward for a second before jerking a little and accelerating normally. Checked the belts and they're all fine.. And my engine isn't losing any RPMs to the compressor..I checked.

I had the same problem on my v6 2.8. Check all your mounting bolts! Mine ended up being loose.
It rattled so much that it cracked the mounting bracket. Power steering pump is also attached to this bracket. Talk about a pain in the *** to fix! I had to take it to a mechanic because you need a special tool to remove the power steering pump.
Hope this helps.

Are you talking about the power steering pulley? My '86 2.8's p/s pump unbolts from that bracket, no special tools necessary... in fact, I plan to eliminate the a/c+p/s combo bracket- I yanked my a/c out.

Resurrecting this post, do I have to set the timing with the a/c on? How many bolts are there to tighten on the a/c compressor?
