Your best bet would be to upgrade to a 700r4 at least you get another gear and they make performance kits for them.

Go for as new of a 700r4 (4 speed) as you can... '84 was the "intro" year for v6's, and those trannies aren't that hot. GM just started making them, and improved their design as the years went on. 85-86 is better than an 83-84 700r4, in 1987 GM made most of the "longevity" improvements. Chances are if you snagged a 1987-up 700r4 from a junkyard, it would last the longest.
Make sure to get the trans from another 2.8 (or 3.1) V6, the transmission case was different for a V8 engine.
B&M (and other companies) sell a kit that converts the 700r4 to non-computer-control that you could get. I don't think your computer would be able to control the 700r4; I think the 200C works differently.
