Sounds of different exhaust on a V6...........
Hey guys, I was just wondering if any of you guys have recorded the sound of your exhaust on your V6's. I keep reading about a place called Don's Hot Rod shop that will do the exhaust for cheap, usually from posts from ked85. What I was looking for would be the dynomax catback. But I want to hear different exhausts before I go and buy anything. Maybe I won't like the sound of the dynomax. So post or email me your exhaust sounds if you have them.

yea, heres mine. its a hooker aerochamber with 2.5 in and two 2.25 outs running to 2.5 tips.

i love it. mellow at idle, roars when its open with a very nice throaty sound. and not obnoxious from inside the car. also provided a great performance boost through out the rpm range.

SAEspinz80, that exhaust sounds sweet! Are you sure that's a V6? Just joking, How much did that setup set you back? Installation and everything. And fiream, my email address is emlchunkymonkey@hotmail.com if you want to send it. Do you like your flowmaster? I've heard it doesn't sound too good on our V6's. Well it's all about preference. I might like it!

hehehe....thanks. yea i heard good things about hooker and was able to hear it on a couple cars over the internet. plus, i really didn't like the sound of flow's...but thats just me. anyway. the muffler was 79.00 from summitt racing. the tips were 44.00 (hooker elite stainless steel) a piece, but look sweet. and then a local muffler shop installed it fully welded and mandrel bent pipes for 290. but i couldn't be happier with it.
but if you decide to get one there are two for our cars. one for third gens and one for fourth gens. the dimensions are the same, except the fourth gen one has a 2.5" in and two 2.25" outs. whereas the thirdgen one has a 2.25" and 2 2.5" outs. which didn't make much sense to me. anyway, of course i wanted 2.5" from the cat back and ordered the fourth gen one....and its great. i don't even have a high flow cat yet....check out thier website www.holley.com

The cheapest place to get it installed is your own driveway... am I the only one that does this anymore??

I found them on ebay about 2 months ago, they are Heddman Comp Headers #68430 very rare, and they are brand new. A guy had them in his shop for like 20 years cost me about 200.00 bucks but well worth it, i'm hopping to put them on soon, I need to get 300.00 to gether for a custom exhaust system, true duels, headers back.

I heard they don't make headers for our V6 cars? I've heard of custom headers that are bent from some s-10's. Are they smog legal? Nice buy on them anyways, hope I can find some too!

Yeah these are very rare heddman's they only made the headers for a year or two no one bought them so they were discontinued. I only know of existing set, the two set that were selling on ebay.
I'll have pictures on them soon.

Come on guys! All I hear is that people with a V6 should get the dynomax catback. Surely someone has to have an mp3 or something of their car with this exhaust! Oh, fiream, I haven't received your mp3 yet so I can't tell you if I like it or not yet.

Hey Fiream, it sounds great!!! Though, I still would like to hear a DynoMax Cat-Back as well. Does Edelbrock (sorry if I misspelled) make a cat-back system for our cars? I have always loved the sound they make. Anyway, thanks Fiream, it sounds great!

Elevario, no, it doesn't require welding. All aftermarket cat-backs can be clamped together. And if someone says "oh, a clamp isn't as good", I have to call "BS"! My exhaust systems have been clamped and I have no leaks.
Now if you're getting some custom work done, a welder might have to step in- but if you're buying an off-the-shelf cat-back, you don't need to weld.
But it's your guys' money, anyway! Just wondering why nobody installs their own.

yea, TomP is right. If you buy a cat-back off the shelf you can definately do it yourself, and i too think clamps are perfectly fine. but, i did find however that most catbacks sold for our cars are 3". and IMO thats a little large for a 6, thats why they are always listed for an 8. there is always a chance of loosing performance due to too much lack of back pressure. but there are a number of people running 3" in this board and have no complaints. anyway, my point is that i wanted a 2.5" cat-back, except hooker doesn't make one, and if i remember correctly neither did flowmaster when i called them. so, i just ordered the muffler....then had a local muffler shop custom mandrel bend some 2.5" stainless steel pipe. and since i was already paying them to do it, it was a good idea to weld them too...thats why i didn't do it at home. you want to avoid crimp bends if you can.

Hey fiream, I wanted to know you your exhaust looked. Does it look close to the stock setup? Is it one muffler and two outlets to each side of the bumper? Kind of like a fake dual exhaust. Or do you have one outlet pipe? Because I want to get the flows but I want to keep the car kind of looking stock. Thanks a lot.

Oh yeah! I've seen your car on another post somewhere. Your pipes stick out far on your website! But you said now it only sticks out two inches. Do you have a problem with the bumper turning black from exhaust smoke?

I have no problems what so ever, except people get pissed when they are around be the pipes because the extra 2" help angle the sound out so people can here it. Bad for them sounds great to me.

Ok, I know I like the flowmaster 80's but above 3000 rpms it sounds kind of crappy. Is there any exhaust that sounds good in low rpms and high?

thats exactly why i didn't by a flowmaster. first everyone has one, so their is nothing unique about having one....and the other thing was on our engines once you revved about 3,000 that just sounded to damn tinny. thats why i bought my hooker aero-chamber. my post with the sound file is at the beginning of this thread. that sound file was recorded while the engine was still cool, but during that recording the rpms got up to at least 4,000 rpms before you hear that little breakup. but once the exhaust gets a little warm and you gun, or rev it up to the red line you don't hear an ringing at all. tell you the truth i love it....my .02. plus the interior resonance isn't bad at all. went out with a few girls at night and still able to hold a conversation, but from behind the car is sounds bad a$$....very deep very throaty. love the sound and the performance gains.

Yeah the flowmasters sound crappy when your revving in the driveway, but under aceleration you can't even notice it. If any thing the sound get mellower and louder, well atleast thats what my car dose.

SAEspinz80 that exhuast you have sounds damn sweet. how much were the gains on that muffler setup. I thought that chamber muff was supposed have a lower flow rating the other muffs out there though? almost made me think there was an 8 in there :-).

thanks RX....yea, i was amazed by the sound too. some guy at work actually came out when we were leaving the other day and was like, that exhust does sound nice, sounds real good for a six! hehe, i was like yea, thanks...i love the sound. anyway, about the flow numbers and gains. the link below will show you their charts, hooker actually flows the most, and shows the most gains. but, yea i definately felt a nice increase. definately have a lot more pull through out the range.

just a note....i bought the specific fit for the fourth gen because i wanted the 2.5" intermediate pipe. then the guy who did the work tapered the tailpipe from 2.25" to 2.5" to fit my 2.5" tips.
