MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

OK guys, here it is. I want to get rid of my old horrible MAF on my '88 Firebird and use an LS1 style MAF. I want the better flow and the much broader options for mounting it and my air filter.

I know some of you guys have been replacing your stock MAF with a different version, but I'm not sure what all is involved; am I going to need a translator (whatever that is hahahhah) or some other special thing to do this? I'll be really surprised if you guys haven't already figured out how to use whatever MAF you want by just adding resistors or something...

Anyway, can I get some guidance here?

Thanks!

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

This is how you KNOW that you're getting old, or in my case just plum run the hell over...

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...stand-maf.html

I couldn't get my search function here to work worth a damn, and then I did a yahoo search and found MY OWN THREAD from back in 2008.

I need a vacation, this damn sun and the hours are getting to me!

This would also require an ECM change... The 302's MAF reports air flow in frequency (hertz), as opposed to the TPI MAF that is analog and reports in voltage. Any pre-90 V6 FI car with the frequency film MAF would need a different ECM.

What Maverick said. But personally unless you need a new one anyways, or are exceeding the capabilities, in terms of flow measuring of your current one, I don't see the point...

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

I thought that was what the translator is for?

The Buick guys have the old style film maf, similar to ours, and with the translator they can run the LS1 maf. Why can't we do that?

This is not about need, its about want. I am preparing to put a bigger engine in that will flow more air, so I want to get everything ready electric wise so that the process goes a little quicker.

Just no purpose unless you're maxing it, or its broke imo, just my
Idk what you are putting in, but unless its a heavily built 90* v6, a boosted 60* or a v8 you probably won't get close to the limit of stock maf.

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

Gathering parts for a 90 degree V6. Buick V6, either 4.1 or 3.8, haven't decided yet...

It will get modded; it will most likely get a turbo as well. I've been looking at the setups on the TTA and they have a similar MAF on the inlet side of the turbo to ours, so maybe I will just use a GN or TTA maf. We'll see... What got me to thinking about it was seeing the modded TTA and GN cars that have the stock ECM, the MAF translator, and an LS1 MAF. They seem to be doing it when they step up to a 3 or 3.5 inch inlet tube.

I am just trying to gather up all the parts right now, as I said before. I have some partial engines, another trans, and lots of other stuff so I'm getting there. I just bought an 88 IROC for parts so maybe I'll mod the ECM and use it and the V8 MAF. I just don't know yet...

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

The biggest MAF on the market is actually a Nissan MAF... And it would still require an ECM change as it's still got a voltage output. I've researched the issue, and have yet to find anything concrete on how to turn the frequency put out by the MAF into a voltage signal from 0-5V with the given 32-150 Hz range.

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

As I said before, I believe that is what the translate part of the MAF translator does. The ones I am looking at are even offering a universal type job that I guess lets you run any MAF from any car. Let me see if I can find that link...

http://www.maftpro.com/vstinfo.shtml

http://www.maftpro.com/index.shtml

I am looking at the first one, the Buick specific. I am going to send them an email and see if it can work with the other GM MAFs from the late 80's as well.

Hahahahhahahha!

No.

I almost did this for the needed floor pan in my 88 'bird, but instead the car is now in line for an LSx transplant. Soon my 03 2500HD is going to give up its 6-liter LS engine for the worthy cause. The truck is going diesel, so that leaves the 6.0 with no home.

Then don't even waste your time with the MAF then, as most Buick guys will be going with the SFI-6 through Bob over at Dynamic EFI anyway. Should be released very soon from what he was telling me. I actually have a Stage II Buick in the works for my 90 GTA, and will only be running the SFI-6 for it when it's installed. Toss the MAF Kris, and don't look back....

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

My ECM is not as good as yours, twin turbo, so I have to decide what to do with it. The V8 TPI ECM is better, but the EBL I think is much, much better. I like the idea of hooking my laptop to the ECM and getting the full diagnostic display as I am moving.

I think EBL is going to happen, I just have to wait for the SFI-6 system to go up for sale.

Ok, hopefully I will get a tag at some point to find out that that the EBL-6 is for sale...

Re: MAF upgrade? How do I do that??

Well, it definitely looks like I will be hitting up the EBL for SFI 6 cylinder applications. It looks like it will accommodate the LS style MAF as well as so many other mods I can't list them.

The only thing I think I will need, I think, will be an under-hood harness for a 3800 car. I don't think you can re-pin a batch fire mpfi V6 harness to do SFI. I may look at buying an entire 3800 junked car, so that I can get the harness, another core engine, and lots of other goodies...

Its getting interesting...

Or I might get a batch fire EBL and just re-pin the harness I have...

Decisions, decisions...
