Another car update..new info need help. Tomp, Karl, ETC

went and bought an autometer air/fuel ratio gauge and put it in, turned on car when it warmed up my hunch was right. Im running LEAN LEAN LEAN. It was BRIGHT Red indicating VERY lean..all the way at the bottom of the guage.. so now that ive narrowed it down to a fuel problem..where should i start? The fuel pressure is a steady 40psi...??!

Have you checked f/p with the return hose clamped off? You'll get the dead head pressure (max pressure) of the pump, which should be 60 psi. I think this test will also determine if your pressure regulator is leaking. I've heard you can also check it by pulling the vacuum line to the pressure regulator; if there's gas in the vacuum line, the diaphragm in the regulator went bad.

You're not getting any codes, right?

Nope..no codes. Hmm ok ill try pulling the vacuum line.. I just changed the fuel filter to be sure and it was clean gas in the old one so that was fine.

The vacuum hose doesnt have any gas in it... im stumped. Its running really lean on the air/fuel ratio gauge...i mean it goes really lean when idling.. then goes all over the place when your driving

You just passed smog, right?
Any reading to confirm what the smog test showed?
What is the idea/thinking behind this current testing?
To identify the cause of the white smoke?
When I rebuyilt/changed/swapped my fule pressure regulator, all it was was a rubber diaphram in that housing. Not much more. Shold eb easy to get one from the yard, EXCEPT you need a special torx socket, with a slight push pin in it, to remove those torx screws.
My buddy had a set of those tools. I never knew that special torx screw existed. I was informed it's a safety screw becuase of fuel pressure.

BTW..would a fuel pressure regulator only cause a hesitation from idle? If it is the regulator, im going to get an adjustable one from a 305tpi and put that in
