Air filter
Air filter
Hey, I have the 3.1, in my 92 rs, and I currently have a stock replacement K&N filter and I would like to get better airflow, and was wondering....I know this sounds a bit too ***** to do but I was wondering if there was a good way to get a cone K&N to go right off of the Throttle Body.
was wondering if you guys knew a way, as you and I both know there is enough room for a cone filter as there is still space for the imaginary two extra cylandars.
I'de appreciate any input on this, thanks
long live the f-body

i have a good idea for you
get the dual snorkle intake that comes on the TPI and 85-89 v-6 camaro's and look in the tech article section on how to make a Ram Air system that is what i will be doing

I agree... the problem with a conical right on the throttle body is that you'll be sucking in hot air off the engine and radiator. It looks great, but the dual-snorkel intake would give you colder air- and two filters, too. In place of the 85-89 MAF sensor, you could use a 3" piece of exhaust pipe, or you could gut a junkyard MAF sensor.

Thanks for the input, I'm thinking the dual snorkels might be a big hassle though as the second snorkel and cannister has to sit right where my battery is, so I think I might just keep my current setup, just get rid of my cannister and the tiny little snorkel, because I could take that off and just connect a connical filter to the duct itself, that way I'll have a ton more intake, than I'll make a cold box out of metal around it like two sides so I can pull in air from two different areas, thanks I found insperation from this stuff to mod my bone stock v-6, and make it better for now, I just have to fix my control module right now, it is running a code 43 which is an ESC Fault, then I'll save up for a performance chip and do the filter at the same time....thanks again

Check out this unique, yet highly controversial ram-air for the 3.1

well, the dual snorkle setup goes no where near the battery so i think you are mis-imagining what it looks like
its actually quite easy to do

Click on the link in my signature and go half way down to see mine.. mine was really easy, cheap, and works. It involves the racing K&N filter (the largest and highest flowing they have) and a sawzall.. i took out the old air box, relocated the charcoal canister, and cut a hole in the battery box and stuck the filter through there. I have no fog lights so air comes through the fog light holes and right into the filter

Yeah, we don't mean adding a second air passageway on the driver's side... 85-89 Camaros used the "dual snorkel intake". This consisted of two filters, one sat on each side of your hood latch. The filters were placed "in front of" the radiator- and this is a "high pressure area"... meaning, some air is forced in by the airdam (under the radiator) as you drive. The intake went straight over the radiator, where it converged into one single pipe. At this point, the 85-89 MAF sensor was inserted, and then a hose connected the MAF to the throttle body.
Your 92 RS won't have a MAF, so you can substitute a piece of exhaust pipe for it.
The article is under thirdgen.org's tech section. If you search the "reader's rides", pull up some 85-89 Camaros and look for engine pictures- you'll see the dual snorkel.
You're also in luck; the dual snorkel is "too tall" for a Firebird. The hood of a Firebird slopes too much, and comes very close to the upper radiator support beam. If you have a 90-92 Camaro, the dual-snorkel is a direct bolt-in, just visit a junkyard and get all the pieces! (maybe you'll get a discount if you say your friend was in an accident and his cracked...)

here ya go, this is a picture of my engines dual snorkle intake, please excuse the mess seeing as how this is my BEFORE picture of what the engine looked like
as you can see it connects to the very front of the hood and doesnt even get near the battery, i am planning on modifying it to a Ram air intake in due time, today im buying the K&N filters for it and in a few weeks modifying it, works damn well if ya ask me, better than that puny single snorkle

Hey all I appreciate the strieghtening, I am obviousely not an expert, but now I think I have an idea that will kick butt on the ram air desighn, I am going to make the mod, but I am goin g to make it out of PCV piping, after the stock plastic split off of the Throttle Body, then I'm going to find a conversion plate, or make one through jery rigging that will swap the square ducting to round ducting, which then I'll go to the piping, then I'll make a gradual curve and at the end I'm going to somehow flair the end, just like the little woussy single snorkel is, to get better velocity, then in the round ducting I will find a way to put a cone K&N filter in each duct, that way the engine won't work hard, and it will be a wonderful desighn, I hope....... let me know what you think, I am modifying the desighn in the tech article with the help of my RX7 friend, he is knowledgable, so I'm thinking I'll have him help me modd it, but then again, this will be a while befor I am able to make this modd, please just let me know if you think this is a good idea, thanks you guys rock,
now that sounds friggin interesting, i hopw you figure it out and have one awesome custom ai intake thta knowone else will have thats for sure
, that is unless you share it with your fellow thirdgenners heh
