Would this re wiring job be bad or not?
I am going to wire my fan to the back of the altenator where you bolt down the lead wires on the back. The negative wire will be ground
to the back of the drv head with the other
grounds. Will this short out the alt or drain the battery?

Project has a point, but if you use the neg side as the switch it cures that situation. Just wire it from your batt and be done with it. It's just alot less of a hastle.

I tried to wire it to the battery, but it comes on at all times,so that rulled out my
first option. It was on when the motor was
off,and that will drain the battery if its on 24/7.

well... can you easily get to your coolant sensor?. If so go to auto zone, napa and look through there catalogs to find a thermo switch. I have an audi I think maybe volvo anyway its a thermo switch that connects power when the coolant hits 176 and cuts it when the coolant is below 165. It has 1 prongs for either the power or ground to complete the circuit.

If you have the switch connected to the ground the fan should not come on if the switch is not thrown. And vise versa with the pos side. If you have the fan still connected to the factory ground its gonna stay on all the time if you hot power to the fan. The fan is always grounded. But if you cut the ground wire and run one end to the switch then from the switch back to the other end of the wire the cicuit will only close when the switch is on.

Me personally have that whatever thermo switch and a manual switch on tha aux 10 inch perma cool fan.

ahh I see what you did. Ok quick fix.wire from battery, put in a fuse 20 amp should be fine. Run that wire to one side of the switch. Run the wire coming from the 2nd prong of the switch to the fan. This is how I have my aux fan wired. It's completely manual and is easily forgotten. If you want you can get a normal fan relay for a GM carand you have to look at how its wired. But you can tap a hot power supply fron the fuse block when the switch is in the on position and run that wire to the activation part of the relay. Run the fused wire from the battery to the input side of the relay and the putput wire goes to the fan. This way the fan will be on when the key is in the "on" position. I know this sounds a little confusing but its really not.
