well as it was put before yes the 3.1 700r4 could take it but that does you no good because the 3.8/4.3 is a 90 degree block and not a 60 like the one you have. So no it won't bolt up.

Personally, it holding up is questionable in my mind, but everyone's right on the more important note. The 60 degree transmission simply won't bolt up to the 90 degree block. Just like doing a v6-v8 swap. All 3.8s/4.3s are are 305s and 350s minus 2 cyls.

In search of new v8 engine & transmission, now contemplating t5 swap to get me out of this mess.
Misc Mods: Cut air box, '83 Firebird spoiler.
Performance Parts: MSD coil, Accel 8mm wires, SplitFire plugs, Gabriel hijackers.
Audio Mods: Pioneer DEH-P3000, two 12" Optimus Pro Audio subs in hand-made enclosure each powered by a 260 watt Optimus amp. Working on shaving the box for weight.

You guys really need to read about the car first. It is a 2.8, correct. 60* block. But l'll bet that five speed in his sig is a MANUAL, not a five speed AUTOMATIC.

Now we are talking manual tranny for a 60* to a 90* manual. Those are doable. You need a new bellhousing, and maybe some other misc parts (I always had an auto, darn the luck) but it is doable.

Hehe, good reading, Clayton; I missed that one myself. Guys have even put the V6 5-speed behind V8's, but even they have said "baby it or it'll break". If the trans can hold a V8 I'd think it would hold the 3.8 V6.

My reply was a J/K as many of us are aware of the 60* factor in Auto selection.
NOW, I missed the "stick" issue, too!

I wasn't kidding. He asked if it would "bolt right up?" Uh.. No it won't. You have to change stuff, BTW, the V-6 T-5 has a longer input shaft, if your clutch hangs up you'll know why. Could it handle a 3.8 or a 4.3? Yes, in theory it could, isn't that what I said? He also said TIA, I was polite and said Y/W.

Picky, picky, picky....

Whoops.. missed the 5 speed thing too. My bad. It'll bolt up with some modification. There's talk of the 60 degree t5's clutch being a little small for some applications, but a 3.8/4.3 shouldn't pose a problem.
