What makes the car run better after filling up with some gas?

what causes that? My blue blob seems to run alot stronger right after putting about 4 gals into it. And I'm wondering why? Is it a bad fuel pump or what?

Heh, I was wondering something along these lines. You know how we're supposed to run at the racetrack with as empty of a tank as we can, to reduce weight? Well, what if, when we take off at the green light, the gas sloshes away from the fuel pump's pickup? We'd be starving for fuel, and running slower.

My fastest time ever, with the car in horrible running condition (pre-modded), back in '96, was run with a full tank of gas.

Hey TomP, ask any drag racer and they say running with anything less than full is asking for trouble...! (ive seen john force in the pits before when with a friend..)

I've noticed the same thing. Not only on our third gens, but one some other various cars i've driven. Probably the pump isnt getting consistant feed which causes the fuel lines to get less pressure. But then again, as long as the pump is submerged, it should all be good right?

I've heard that a lot of drag racers have like a quarter tank in, if not more. They say it helps by keeping the back tires on the ground from the extra weight.

Well if you have FI the reason this occurs is heat! The fuel pump in the tank uses fuel to cool itself thus can work more efficently.
More variables
Water in the tank.
Just plain old low on gas and cant pick enough up to feed the engine.
And my favorite SmartARSS one
Cars always run better with fuel than with out

Might have something to do with sloshing in the tank

Our F Body tanks are LOUSY designs.
So much fuel is lost/moved during cornering, the pumps starve. Same with drag racing!
It was only on the 1LE optioned cars, that got a great tank (internal baffle).
Then the next year or so cars all got the better tank design.
What was the first year of the 1LE optioned cars?
And will those later F3 tanks fit the earlier cars? Like my 1985??????? I want to go canyon carving & not worry abot the pump starving!

well yeah the load of fuel helps the engine get fuel. It also depends on the QUALITY of fuel you get.

As far as the tank itself, after I am finished building this 4.3 I am gonna put in a racing cell. I was looking at a 16 gal tank, a little more fuel to help on long drives(or more fuel to go 8er hunten!)

"psycho"

better burnouts with less gas in it though.
btw: john forces gas tank probably doesnt hold 1/4 of the camaro tank. if your racing just about any class with the word "street" in it, you only want about 4 gallons, & a better fuel pump if you have a problem with it.
