fiream, how do you figure? As long as the rims stay the same, and tire profile stays the same, the speedo will be the same... Tire width has nothing to do with it.

He's right, it will make your speedo off.

Here, I'll break it down for you:
235/60/15
235 Tread width in in millimeters
60 sidewall height expressed as a % of tread width.
15 Rim diameter in inches.

So if you go from a 225/60 series to a 235/60 you increase the overall height of the tire by 12mm (10mm increase in width X 60% = 6mm increase in each sidewall. 2 side walls so 6mm X 2 = 12mm). Increasing the height increases the circumfrence, there by making the speedo off. If you go to a 235/55/15 you'll stay closer to your original circumference.

I have 235 60 R15... I never thought my speed was messed up.. I seem to be on target, plus they said that was as big as I could go before that would occur...

Ahhh!!! Very good, very good. I stand corrected. I didn't know the "60" part was a percent figure based on width.

I have BFGoodrich 235/60/15 on the rear of my car and the speedo is NOT off. At least not enough to notice.

If you go to www.tirerack.com (I think) you can see the difference between the radii of the 235/60 and the 215/65(stock size) and it ain't much. I think it was 0.2-0.5 mph at 50mph off.

I only said it would be off, I never said how much...

I still like the shorter sidewalls that the 50 or 55 series gives you. The less sidewall you have the less flex, squirm and tread roll you get when turning, i.e. hard, fast cornering. I don't know about you guys but when I get a wild hair to take a turn way too fast I want every advantage I can get.

I have 255/60/15 on the back of mine and I got a speeding ticket back in April over it. I had the cruise set at 55, but I was really doing 66.

Tire calculator says that with a 235/60R15 will read 1.84% to slow. But you have to remember that at highway speeds that percentage increases. The tire you need is a 245/55R15.

Guys, I have 235/60's all the way around, and my speedometer is dead on. We have those lil highway speed things that tell you how fast you're going around here, and they're always right on my speed, plus when I checked my speed after I got them, it was dead on w/ my friend's Z28.

So, all in all the 235/60 will fit on my 15X7 rim. And the car calls for 215/65, which works out to almost the same height. I just ed wanted to know if they fit, not speedo readings...Thanx,

yes they will fit. And the speedo should not be off very much if at all.

My dad, who is a cop, had me do 2 runs by him. 25 for me is really 28 and 45 is really 50. That was probably the only time that I could speed legally in town..

The "first" large tire I put on the back rims were P245/60r15's. They were Goodyear GT+4's, and I never spent that much on a rear tire again! Those were the stock rims at the time, the 15x7's, and I didn't have to do any wheelwell modifications.

It also never occurred to me way back then that my speedo would be off!

Oh Crap; I wasn't paying attention; sorry! The P245/60r15's will fit on the rim, but I don't know if they'll fit the car on the front. For some reason I forgot about the front wheels... sorry!

Hey, wait; didn't a Trans-Am come with P245's up front?

For me, PSI depends on the type of tire. My Goodyear tires on the front want 40s while the BFGoodrich on the rear want 30s.

Manufacturers like to vary their requirements for some reason.

I'm going with original size tires. Why.
Cheapest thing I can find, right now. I run it at 36 PSI, works fine.
I found a brand new 215/65/15 for $15 at a swap meet. One more tire to go.
Yea, us in LA don't worry to much about snow.
BUT I SURE DO WORRY ABOT RAIN!
I'd love to have new Goodyears all around, but....
When I can find "free" tires at swap meets, I'll live with it.

My 1974 Corvette is 225/70/15 all around, the stock size on the 15x8 stock steel wheels.
I always try to stay stock size. TRY.
That way, I can rotate the tires and equal tire wear all around. That helps big time. BUT, I have 215/60/15 on the front of my 1967 Camaro & 245/60/15 on the back (on 15x7 wheels. too). For that "little" purpose car, I don't worry about rotating tires. I just like the classic Big & Little, lowered front end, look on a classic style ride (reminds me of the days of 1970's Drag Racing Class Pro Stock). My Wifes 1968 Camaro is all same size, for rotating/wear purposes.
Differnt cars, different missions.

I would not put more than a 225 on a 7" rim... it will look a little out of place and you will get a slightly off reading... if need be, go with a 235/55R15 I feel kinda silly running 215's on my 8" rims now... tires are crappy though, so they'll burn out... then I'm gettin' some 245's

My 235/60s look just fine, to me and according to all those radar speed signs in my area my speedo is right on. Anything bigger would look funny to me.

To each their own.

umm thats the maximun cold PSI, not the auto manufactures'. Go by the cars recomended PSI not the max PSI on the tire.. Geese I have worked on cars and been a tire guy for numerous years and this makes the upteenth millionth time I have had to tell people this. The MAX PSI on the sidewall IS NOT RECOMENDED FOR DAILY USE. YOU WILL BURN THE CENTERS OUT OF THE TIRES VERY VERY QUICK. AND THE MPG THING... well if you want to buy new/used tires every 6 months go for it but I would deal with the 30 mpg(I get that) then the 35 maybe with that 44 PSI but have to spend 200 bucks every 6 months.
