Starter-- -- -- Weird Problem???

Ok guys help me out on this one, I was out driving around. Stopped my Camaro did some shopping and came out, put the key in, starter won't start so I say ok, got to be a starter/battery right??? NO!! tryed it a few minutes later starts right up, no problem, perfect, so I head on over to the next store, come out same thing again, so I call my old man to give me a jump start, I got this spinning noise, no engagement, but when I hit the key the 2nd time it started right up.

Ok I had the battery tested, PERFECT, only is 3 months old, the guy at AutoZone said it was the SPRINGS inside my starter so he sold me the drive gear and the return spring for the drive gear, IS HE RIGHT???

I can't get it do fail again, WORKS PERFECT now, so what's UP????????

There is nothing to be worried about all you did was rebuild the starter. What happened was when you turned the key the starter was not engauging.(when you hit the key it sends an electronic pulse to the starter selinoid, which engauges the spring that moves the gear to the flywheel on the crank shaft.) So what happened was you turned the key the selinoid went to engauge the spring and spin the starter motor that turns the gear that was supose to be pushed up next to the flywheel, but the gear didn't get push up so when you let off the key the you were hearing the gear spin inside well inside the starter where it is kept when the starter in not running. But since you have replaced the gear and spring you should be fine.

My suggestion is just go out and buy a hi tourqe starter, it better for winter starts.

check your starter switch, key lock switch, & nutruel safety switch. Not sure if there is a relay for it. Some times there can be a dead spot in the starter, but 2 times in a row is pushing it.

Well I haven't put in the drive gear and spring yet but it did it again early this morning so I guess thats it, will do ASAP.

Thanks,

Yes start switch and all that other stuff if working fine, just the starter is the weak spot.
