Timming Chain

I think I read a while back that the timming chain could be checked w/ a timming light. My ? is: How much will the notch move on the harmonic balancer if the timming chain has exessive slop. Even if the chain was good, would it still bounce around a little? Thnx

Here's what ya do.
The bolt on the crank snout is 17mm.
Hook up a socket to that.
Pop off distributor cap. Move crank. See how long it takes for the rotor to move. Rotate until the marks on the balancer are shown.
IF it takes about an inch of crank movement to move the rotor, at all, you need a chain!!

Simple answer: How many miles are on the car? I changed mine at 189,000. The books say that the replacement time is 25,000 miles, but that's a perfect situation. Think of all the cars with high mileage and their original chains! I was getting very worried around 189k... a snapped chain was the last thing I needed.

Northern Auto Parts. 800-831-0884
Speed pro timing chain.
Fel Pro timing chain swap set. NEW WATER PUMP (It's in your hands when ya do this swap!). Your bill delivered is abotu $65-ish.
After ya do the swap, use water for the cooling, UNTIL YOU MAKE SURE you are leak free. Then switch to water. Straight water corrodes the inside of the timing chain cover BIG TIME!!!
YOU NEED THE BEST BALANCER REMOVER YOU CAN RENT!
Also check all hoses, NOW for replacing.
AFTER YOU DO THIS, it is wise to give your car a distributor tune up. Rebuild it with all new electronics.
Kay Auto 800-995-0296 has all the distributor stuff you need.
ASK FOR SAUL, tell him Karl sent ya. HE'LL DO YA A GREAT DEAL!
You are basically rebuilding your ignition system in the car. Your car will be so happy!!
PLUS your gas milage will increase BIG TIME!! and so will pep!!
This is a real mission job, but SO WORTH IT SO WORTH IT!!
I've done this job twice (two different cars!).

Get a balancer puller, you'll have no problem at all.

MAKE SURE YOU RENT THE BEST BALANCER PULLER YOU CAN.
MAKE SURE IT IS THE BEST FANCIEST THEY HAVE.
Then this job will be easier. Not saying it's easy, but, it'll be easier.

Well, you need a puller REGARDLESS....I don't think anyone is strong enough to pull it off...lol. And as Karl said, it still won't be easy. It took me about 45-60 minutes to get mine off and I had some sore hands afterwards.
