Engine problems
Ok, my car has been acting funny for the past few days. Normally, it has a bit of a hesitation to it..I've been thinking I need to get my timing adjusted. Today, the hesitation was extremely bad.. To the point where I press the pedal halfway down and the car lurches forward with about half as fast as it should be going, and when I floor the pedal, it stays at about idle engine RPM and then suddenly screams up and kicks hard into the next shift.. That's the first problem. The second problem is when I'm doing a steady speed. It seems to happen at any speed, and not all the time, but happens most frequently around 45 mph. I'll be giving the car steady gas, and everything's fine, but then I feel a little lag, like a drop off, as if I'd let off the accelerator, then it unnoticeably speeds back up to normal...then it lags back again. I seem to lose 1 or 2 mph to this at most, usually it's not something that manifests itself in speed or engine RPM by any significant amount, but I can definitely feel it happening. What's going on guys?
Oh, and my car is a 1991 RS 3.1 liter V-6. Only mods are: K&N & 7mm hi-temp silicone wires.
And it can't be a fuel filter problem because I had a really nasty filter in already and replaced it.

It could be the throttle position sensor (TPS). The one on my cousins '83 'Bird went bad and caused some irratic problems like you described.
