Gunk in the intake ????

I noticed today when I took all the intake hoseing off the there is alot of gunk grease and grime in the inner sides of the intake and on the back of the butterfly. How would I go about doing a through cleaning of the intake without messing anything up is there a guide with pictures?

Go to an automotive store and buy some stuff called "something something for fuel injected engines" I forget how they word it exactly on the bottle. You'll know when you see it. It'll be in a can like WD-40 and Brakleen. Just MAKE SURE it says 'for fuel injected engines' somewhere on the can. Do not use carb cleaner! We have some kinda of protective substance on our TB and plenums that the carb cleaner takes right off, hence the 'made for FI engines' specific cleaner.

Yep, get some FI cleaner, I had this same stuff its dark black, and its all over the inside of the intake. Well mine was caused cause my engine is getting old, and has alot of Blow-by.

Make sure you get FI cleaner though the wrong Carb Cleaner can cause more harm than its worth....

Oh yeah, and to clean it... take off the TB, and upper plenum and just spray it down. Paper towel and wipe, spray some more, wipe some more... ect... Could do the middle and lower portion as well, but the fuel rail will have to come off, and you're talking about at least a day long project, possible extending throughout the weekend if you go that far...

You'll probably need to pick up a gasket set for the TB and plenum... shouldn't cost -too- much. I suppose you could reuse the gaskets but don't yell at me if you get vaccuum leaks...

One more thing. While everything is off and once clean, you could also do some porting and polishing. Even simple gasket matching will help. Smooth everything out and make the transitions into the parts as clean as possible. The real work thats needed on our engines in on the exhaust side of things, so there is no need to get too excessive.

well i kinda did the same thing last weekend, took of my intake, took it to car wash, high pressure washed it and then let it soak in soapy water overnight, getting ALOT of carbon off, then i ported it, and gasket matching is when u port the intake on both sides of the gasket, which means the gasket it actualy bigger, and becomes a restriction since u took away material on both sides where the gasket will go, so the gasket gets in the way, so u cut it so its size matches the size of the port openings.

I actually cut my own gaskets. I picked up some black gasket material, in a roll, at Pep Boys (by the gasket sealant tubes) for $3. Then I used an Xact-o knife, a punch to cut new gaskets, using the old ones as a template.

The first time I did this, I bought the Fel-Pro "intake gasket set", which ran me $30. It had a lot in it:

intake-manifold-to-head gaskets
small tube of RTV for the "china wall" intake manifold area
valve cover gaskets (cork)
middle-plenum-to-intake-manifold gasket
upper-to-middle-plenum gaskets
TB gaskets (tb-to-plenum, egr-to-tb)

The $3 roll of gasket material is a much better deal!

If your running K&N filter you will get a lot of that, due to the poor Micron filtration rating of a K&N. Thats why K&N filters flow more air, less filtration. Also means shorter engine life.

If you don't believe and you want to put me down, JUST GO COMPARE Micron ratings. It will shut you up real fast.

And one last thing, you know that 5HP they promise, you don't get it till the HIGH END.

LOL

I Looked at autozone in the Chilton manual for the intake **** It says to drain the radiator is that nesesary?/ or do I just unbolt everything and clean the **** outa it and put it back together I was hoping some ppl would have pics of this :-(

Michael, the section you read probably talked about taking off the intake manifold. The upper radiator hose (follow it to the engine) goes into a thermostat "water neck", which bolts to the intake manifold. So if you pull the intake manifold, you'd need to drain the radiator.. but we're just talking about the upper plenum (spider looking thing) and throttle body.

Well the pics in the chiltons manual didn't show any pics of the intake manifold they just showed pics of the intake itself so idunno haha how much of a pain does it lead to to do this task? anyway

As far as K&N filters having poor micron ratings that could be true, but how high do you want that rating really? I mean you don't want to have it so high you choke your engine of air. K&N also says on their filters that dust and dirt works to your advantage, perhaps it blocks more dirt that you claim gets by. I highly doubt that many people would buy K&N solely on the promised 5hp gain, I know I didn't. I liked the fact I didn't have to buy a new pair of air filters every time I needed them.

thats why you OIL the filters, without it, then yes they do suck at filtration, the OIL helps to catch the crap.
