Oil Change

Where do you guys suggest I get an oil change at? Usually go to Wal-Mart (yeah, I know-but it's the cheapest) but I checked my oil at a gas station after they changed it and it was low-don't know if they didn't fill it up all the way cause they're only allowed to put in a max of like 5 qts. or what.....-your thoughts?

Do it yourself its easy! Who wants some teen who doesn't give a damm about your engine doing it. You know that you will do it right!
MY 87 2.8 Camaro takes about 4 quarts of oil with a new filter. Oil is important check it often.

On the same subject, kinda, I heard synthetics aren't good for older engines, so I changed the oil on mine w/ the Mobil Semi-Synthetic Drive Clean blend. It runs a lot smoother now, the oil was like coffee. But is it bad to have semi-synthetic in there?

danm you guys another thing I miss about a piston motor. the oil though yes it is something to watch you dont ahve to put a quart in every 500-1000 miles nor do you have to worry about carbon/sludge build up like I do. if that oil gets bad and gunky it will go into my apex seals and could cuase the motor to go boom. oil change every 1500-3000 miles try for no more then 2000 though

but as for changing your oil dont always need a jack, atelast on my 71 you didn't. I would just put something under the oil pan and then used a long socket with an extention and work it in there and twist like a mo fo and drain it out. worked for me

Our engines hold 4 quarts of oil, using the PF47 filter. If we use the larger PF52 filter (which we all should!!), the motor takes 4.5 quarts, half of which hangs out in the filter.

And I'd never trust my car to Walmart! What kind of tools do you want? All you need is a band-type filter wrench, a pan for oil, a 9/16" open-ended wrench, and a funnel. That's about $20 around here. I know, you can't get under the car, right? Pull the front of the car up onto a curb.

Now what I do not understand is people saying they use a PF47 filter for oil. When I went to the ACDelco website and looked up the filter it says PF52, and I use the UPF52 filter which is Delco's highest grade of filter, you can get them online places or exclusively at Pep Boys. As for where to change your oil, I go to Virginia Tech and well I take it to a Chevy dealer down here. I bring them the oil and filter I want put on the car and they only charge labor. It is around $11 here when I have them change it. Otherwise when I am at home I do it myself which is always best.

Josh, that's because you have an '88 2.8. That's when GM stopped using the PF47 and started using the PF51's. (Then the PF51's had no anti-drainback valve, so GM stopped using them, and went to PF52's). The PF47 was spec'd for 2.8's from '82 to '87, and it was the same oil filter used on the 2.5 I-4's in F-bodies!

ACDelco's web site might have changed to reflect this, but chances are, if you walk into an auto parts store, their books & computers will still mention the PF47.
