for performance shift at red line or shift early to get into the next gear faster and wind that one out. I just learned this method. It slows down your mph but if you are racing another manual car it will get him when he shifts. Its hard to explain. Anyways best fuel eco, you should have a shift light. Shift by it. If you dont have one 2,500rpms

its an 88 mpfi v6 with manual.
and is it safe for the engine to go up to the red line (around 5000 rpm) cuz i only have about a 1000 km on it since the rebuild( around 750 niles)

If your car is like mine when it gets around 4500 rpms it will kinda hang there then if you hold it in longer it will start to shake alittle. ANYWAYS, 1st gear you can really shift just about as soon as you get rolling. Then 2500rpms is the least safe time to shift for your engine.

These are the Shift into that I shift at normal driving
2nd around 3k-3300
3rd around 3k
4th around 2750

Performance
2nd 5500
3rd 4700
4th 4500
5th no point cause I am at speed limiter

I just listen to the engine, when it starts to really rev I shift.
