Tach with shift light or no? opinions
Anyone in here using a tach? Im going to be getting one for my chevelle this week, but cant decide if i want a tach with just memory or with memory and shift light. The tach will be mounted on the console in my chevelle, which puts it pretty much totally out of peripheral vision... ideas? opinions? TIA

I have a remote mounted shift light on my truck. It helps when your paying more attention to surrounds "I.E pedestrians and police" I personally reccomend the light vrs the recall. There no use in recalling what rpm you were at when your engine blew becase you were revving to high

I always liked the memory tachs , I ran one in our Jersey Speed Skiff when I was racing and alot of times I didnt have time to look down to see what kind of revs I was pushing.
The tach light is also a good Idea .
But I think if you're worried about over revving the engine , I would definately invest in a rev limiter. It would deinately save the engine if you miss a shift or the transmission gives up. Mallory Ignition makes them and alot of our competitors used them in their boats so they must hold up pretty good.

From one that has played with sticks alot (but, I recal ya running a TH350 tranny?)
You should be able to shift by ear (know what the engine sounds like at RPMS).
SBC usually go to 5K.
You can EASILY shift higher than that, but, it tends to be wasted effort, unless you really have a primo SBC engine.
Get a light activated by shift RPMS, plant it where ya wanna see it.
Last tach I saw on a console was the old Plymouths & a few Olds from the 60's.
Great spot to mount it would be where we all did, steering column.
Or even better, go to the swap meets and score the three round gauge package from a Monte Carlo or an SS Chevelle.

I was thinking the same thing as SSC... a remote shift light (or the shift LED by Autometer). Then you can get the memory tach, and still have a shift light/LED.

I think shiftlights look cool Gram i dono how it would look on your car but on my firebird i plan on getting the hood ach they used on GTO and the 400 firebirds i think that would give it some more appearance and a little eye catcher.

remeber this about hood tachs, eventualy they will crap out unless you don't slam the hood down hard
Since they are available aftermarket, update circuitry.
Have you found any of the panels ya still looking for David?
I may be going to the Long Beach Swap meet this weekend.
Long Beach College
Email me if ya need info or directions from your place.
Strongly suggest you go, looking for your 1968 Firebird sheet metal and plan on bringing it back home with ya, cause you'll find it!
Hery Graeme, you should go, too!
I know you'll find the original 3 round circle gauge dash SS option package set up.
It'll match the console set up it sounds like you already have.
Do you have the Horseshoe shifter, too?
IF IT'S THE ORIGINAL STYLE, DON'T BUTCHER IT!
They're worth a pretty penny. Like possible $400+.

Yep, i have the horseshoe shifter! Thanks for telling me, i was gonna pull it out and throw it away for a B&M (DOH) but since you told me no way! They have the FULL SS Guage clusters there? WOW! I havent been able to locate one ANYWHERE. Any idea how much they were going for? I was going to try to pull my points and condensor out this weekend for a pertronix ignitor ignition, but since u mentioned that it makes me think.

Graeme, if you do the Pertronix, let me know! My girlfriend's mom drives a '73 Nova, and we were thinking of throwing the points out for the Pertronix setup. Looks like a damn good idea!

will do Tom.. just waiting for a check to come in, then ill make my decision on tach vs. ignition. So far, it looks like the pertronix ignition, its getting harder to start my car the colder it gets

Graeme, You can always bring it by here.
I got the stuff to do a tune up with (Like points cost about $3). I was gonna do a tune up (replace the points) on my Vette.
We can check out the cap & such.
Petronix set ups are OK.
There are much better out there.
Going to the swap meet will net you SO MANY OPTIONS, it'll hurt ya.
By getting a Monte Carlo (from 70-72) dash will get ya the Speedo & dash, itself. You remove the "wood covering" "actually sheet metal painted) & you have the 3 hole SS Chevelle set up.
Those gauge set ups go for about $10-$350.
Yes, you have to see what ya get.
Sometimes ya get REAL LUCKY & buy from one that doesn't know.
IF ya get the proper 3 hole dash set up, you can always install the proper sized tach to match opening.
You wanted to ditch the shifter set up.
Glad I caught ya early.
IF YA WANNA INSTALL AN AFTERMARKET SHIFTER, go find a damaged console set up to butcher.
Yea, those things go for pretty pennies.
Anything for a car from the muscle car era goes for a very pretty penny.
That's why ya hunt at the swap meets (Long Beach & Pomona).
Bring a wagon. And a notebook and pen for phone numbers of people you want to say hi to later to buy the part from.
Get a hold of me off line I MAY BE going.
ALOT of people needing holday money & sellign stuff!! Dirt Cheap
AND YOU DO NEED TO BE AT THE SWAP MEET AT 7AM to get the best deals, too.
Early birds get the best deals.
David, ya still reading this? I know you still need parts for your 1968 Bird.

David, Think about your question.
No, it's NOT GOOD!!!!!!!!
What happened?
I think I have a radiator support for ya and other items. MAYBE ONE WHEEL, too.
Get ahold of me off line.
You'll have to visit a wrecking yard with me to get those parts, located in Sun Valley. No, NOT MEMEORY LANE!
Maybe it's time to build you a 455 engine!
If it's wet on the road, I can't go. My Corvette back tires are bald & I won't drive that car on wet roads, at all.
AND the NEXT Long Beach is Dec 9th, if the rain is to strong on Sunday.
Take a pic of your Firebird to send me, so I can score ya the parts.

David, give a shout, I can get ya the parts you are after.
No Graeme has the Chevy 5 Steel Slotted Rallye wheels 15x7.
We just have to go to this guys wrecking yard and get the stuff off the car.
I think I can score ya the inner fenders, the radiator support & some more misc. little pieces. He possibly has that Pontiac Ralley 1 style Five Spoke wheel, too. I know he has the other stuff, for sure. It's on the 1969 Firebird I brought over there.
Give a shout, we'll get it for a good price for ya!
