Car got stuck in second gear while driving..YIKES

im driving along and i come to a stop light so i apply the brakes and the car was stuck in second reading at 2500 RPM'S,i could barley stop the car and heading into onward traffic. so the only thing i could do was stick the car in neutral and the RPM's went racing up to 8 and then stuck the car back in drive. car jerked forward very hard and roughly but went back to normal. and this happened TWICE in the same day. what happened??

Do you have cruise control? If you do, I would put money down that it's getting stuck... check the cable or disconnect it entirely. Could also be problem with the throttle cable.

next time, push the clutch in at the same time you SHUT THE THING DOWN! redline is like 6 or 6.5... 8 = valve float for sure... your engine won't last too long while a few more shots like that.

As for what's happening? Make sure the throttle isn't getting stuck... YOu may laugh, but if your floormat gets pushed too far down it won't let the pedal come back, and it'll get stuck.

Check for vacuum leaks, and other cables that could be getting stuck.

Oh hell yeah! That damn thing happened to me once; I slowed at a stop sign, and was leaning on the brakes as my engine rpm's were way up. Nobody was around, so I sat there, panicked, wondering what was wrong- till I reached down and pulled the floormat away from the gas pedal- and the car acted normal again! Scary...

Pump the gas pedel a couple of times with your hand (with the car off) and see if it is sticking. If it is spary a little WD40 ware the pedel arm goes through the floor board to try and free it up. If that doesn't work make sure the linkage under the hood is not sticking.

Of course it could be IAC is dirty as hell and it is getting stuck. Also could be your TPS going south or out of adjustment. I seen cars with a TPS just sit there and rev up and down like a cat on crack.

There is a tech article on how to adjust both them.

https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/tpimod2.shtml

As far as cleaning them I think it was TomP or Ked85 who had a really good explination on how to clean the IAC passage.

I have had problems like this one was with the floor mat...but you already stated taht wasn't it.

But the other one was my throttle cable some how got a kink in it and it stuck in once while driving... Another things is get something better than WD-40, like Rust Check spray or something, and spray the cables under the hood and work them back and forth a couple of minutes then spray them again To make sure there free. If it still does this wide open throttle thing then get TomP or Ked to tell you about cleaning the IAC and testing the TPS.

Tom is primo on the cleaning & resetting tips.
Me?
IF STUCK, that's kinda easy to find.
Just follow the throttle cables.
IF it's vacuum you can hear that, too.
If electrical, download the codes.
Ain't it fun to search for those things?
Slam into neutral and shut off key as quick as possible.

I doubt that a messed up IAC or TPS would cause the car to redline. The IAC passages are not large enough to let that much air in. It would be like running a marathon while breathing thru a c<X>ocktail straw.

The TPS only tells the computer how far you have the throttle open. If it gets messed up and tells the computer that the pedal is floored and it is not, the throttle blades will be closed and there will not be enough air for all the fuel and the engine will probably stall or at least try to. (Back to the straw analogy)

I would look for something sticking. Maybe give everything a good coat of lube and move the throttle a few hundred times to make sure it works.

BTW It is not a bad idea to clean/reset the IAC and TPS anyway as a matter of general maintenance.

Just my $0.02

Dale
