valve stem seals?

Im not putting my heads back together for a bit but, I know when i removed all the valves the little black plastic seals all broke. They were so brittle and old.

Do i need to replace these with new ones? Which i would think i would.

Also are those seals made only for our valves or are they universal and fit all types of valves?

Thanks

Re: valve stem seals?

Fairly common size, and cheap too. Should be easily under $30 for a set.
Mine are going, but I'm way too lazy to tear apart the head for maintenance.

Re: valve stem seals?

dpnt rep[lace them with stock o ring seals, goto ur local autoparts store and get a set of sbc stem seals. these go over the top of the valve guide and are 1000000 times better

get that set then there is enough for the intake and ex , with those u dont need the o-rings, the o-rings are worthless anyway and they make reassembling the valve keepers and locks a pita

I'm looking for the umbrella seals that dont require install of any o-rings.Do I have to use positive seals?any worries about valve guide not getting lube with umbrella type.I keep getting confliting fits wont fit on diff websites looking for felpro preferably thanks

the 2.8 and 3.1/3.1 all can use the .530 size seals for a small block chevy
ur local parts store will stock them , i preffer getting good quality ones from jegs or summit racing , but parts store ones will work just fine . i ust get the better ones since the turbo motor puts out a bunch more heat into the ex valves

no issues on the v6 witht he positive type seals either

this set is perfect for the v6 http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/518-12/10002/-1

Re: valve stem seals?

So the heads have to come off or can i pull the covers, rockers, etc and find a way to keep air in the cylinder so the valves dont drop in? I got 150k on my 5.7tpi and cant afford a rebuild, but getting a bunch of oil into chamber when she sits. Hard to start and blows smoke. My father, mechanic for almost 40yrs, says its the valve seals. I dont wanna open another can of worms by taking heads off. Especially since previous owner booger the intake in.
