Re: cylinder head removal

umm well theres a few ground bolts on the rear of the heads and some of the accesories are attached to them...I.e air pump bracket, stuff like that. You did remove the lower intake right?? Un bolt the exhaust manifolds??? Well the only other thing i can think of is to hit it with a rubber malot and loosen them up. Thats what i did with mine the other week when i removed them.

Re: cylinder head removal

Ok in the attatchment i made some lines on your pic.. Pay attention to the rear of the heads as there are ground bolts on both of them and on the driverside head there is a clip mounted to the heads that holds a big bundle of wires in place. Visisbly make sure that nothing is attached to the heads.
Then in the front of the heads were i made a blue line there is the coolent line that goes into the lower intake manifold. Did you take that off??? That line?
To make it easier i removed all of my accesories exspecially on the passengers side.(the air pump, tentioner, alt.) I also added a picture of my cars motor as i tore it apart. I took more off then youll have to as i replaced the cam also.
If you see that nothing at all is holding the heads on then hit it with a rubber mallet a few times and it should fall off. Be carful with the push rods as they will fall.
You might want to take the rocker arms and push rods off now since youll have to re-lash the valves anyways.(which is supper easy i just did it 3 days ago on mine)

Oh yea you were asking about the spark plugs? Dont worrie about them! They bolt to nothing but the head.

Re: cylinder head removal

You're supposed to remove the intake manifold first... The bolts on that side of the manifold ALL go into the head, and the head isn't going anywhere until the manifold does. FYI, what I do when popping the heads is to leave the pushrods and rocker arm nuts alone and let the spring pressures push the heads off of the gaskets. :edit: You removed the intake plenum, not the manifold... The manifold is where the fuel and air actually meet. The plenum just ducts air into the heads...

You didn't get the cheapo graphite gaskets, did you? If you did, return them and get a pair of FelPro HS8699PT2 gaskets. Might as well do both heads at the same time because if one gasket has failed, the other probably isn't too far behind, and you've already got most of the parts off anyways.

Yes, the distributor has to be marked as to the position of the rotor when installed and it has to come out...

:edit: And you didn't need to remove the exhaust manifold... You're going to need to get some exhaust manifold gaskets now to seal it back to the head properly. I generally leave mine attached and use it as a handle to move the head around .

Re: cylinder head removal

Well, if you needed to remove the head to drill out the old bolts, you still should have left the manifold in place because it would act as a drill guide... I have to do the same with mine.

i use the vr graphite gaskets and they hold up extreamly well on my turbo builds ive never burnt up one of those head gaskets

Re: cylinder head removal

Yes, but those gaskets you use are probably a little less cheaply made than the factory replacement crap gaskets in the usual head sets... I prefer the FelPro's because they have a nice metal ring around the cylinders and they seem to seal better. I just hope that it was a cylinder head problem that kept burning the gaskets between #3 and 5 and not something I need to have the block decked for (although I would like to get the deck shaved approximately .015").

The only thing that physically holds it down it that hold down bolt on the back side of the dizzy. Did you spin the dizzy assembily while gently pulling up on it?
