car acting weird after replacing ignition switch and bypassin VATS
Ok so i have a 92 v6 auto firebird. Ignition switch went out. Thought it was vats. Bypassed it still wouldn't turn the motor over.
Replaced the ignition switch still wouldn't turn over. Wired in a push button from the starter to ignition. Now car turns over and starts. That will work for now.
But here's the issue before repalcing the ignition switch and bypassing vats my car would cruise at 80mph at 2500rpm in overdrive. 1-2 and 3-4 shifts were clean and crisp.
Now at 80mph I'm sitting at around 3000rpms and shifts are slow and sluggish almost slip like. Pretty sure it shifts through all 4 gears but now it seems as if my gearing is changed and oddly enough I have more power. Not a wise thing do to but i pushed it to the speed limiter at 115mph and it pulled strong the whole way up. I'm confused.....I liked being able.to sit at 2500rpm at 80mph

IIRC, these cars have a Torque Converter Locker. That is the only thing I could think of that would change the RPM's you are seeing at speed. If the TC didn't lock up, your engine would spin more per MPH.
Can't say I know where to start diagnosing it, but it's something to look into.

What the zombie mentioned, the TCC isn't locking up. Likely the switch at the brake pedal was knocked ajar while you were under the dash changing the wiring.
The switch is located high up on a bracket near the top of the brake pedal. It provides +12 volts to the TCC solenoid when your foot is off the brake pedal. When on the brakes the switch opens to make sure the TCC unlocks.
The switch is adjusted by pushing it into the retaining clip.

That could be the issue. But i don't really notice any slipping. Just a change in rpm at highway speed. I mean the car sat for almost a year before i got ahold of it. I don't know much about these cars and.don't know what the proper gearing is. All I know is I commute 40 miles one way all highway and constantly do 80mph and for a while I was sitting at 2500 rpm at 80mph and.now.I sit at 3000rpm. The car has never been modified so i don't know what rear is in it or what tranny it has

Wow that makes a whole lota sence. Thanks! I will pull the car in the shop when we slow down and look into that! Gotta love being a mechanic
