Car just died.

My car been acting up for a while now. Whenever it would drop down into a higher gear it would miss i think, felt like a hiccup. Whenever there was more weigh into the car it would be worse. Well, today I was driving and the car just died and now wont start. I replaced the coil and the ignition module tested good.

3 months ago my wiring harness melted to my exhaust, I fixed all them.
Timing was right on the money.
Fuel filter replaced maybe year ago.
I have fuel pressure.

Any help would be nice ty

Re: Car just died.

I was thinking it was the ECU because the wire that comes from the ECU to the fuel pump relay not energizing the fuel pump so I wired the relay to ignition, this happened maybe 6 months ago. Ecu maybe?

Re: Car just died.

I just getting code 33. MAF no the problem. I'm thinking there a short some where from the ecu to ignition module.

1989 Camaro 2.8. It will just keep cranking but will not fire. I have fuel pressure and you can hear the fuel pump kick on.

Re: Car just died.

is the security light on ?

ur vats system may have gone active, if it did its a very simple fix.though since u mentioned the car died while running thats prolly not it.

when u crank the engine does it have spark?does the tach in the dash move while the engine is cranking ?

Re: Car just died.

I already have the vats bypass with some resistors in series. i got the Ignition Control Module tested. I'll try and jump it tomorrow and see if the tach is moving but i'm 75% sure it is. I know the coil is getting a spark when I unhooked the coil spark plug wire it was arcing over to the bracket.

Re: Car just died.

Alright. The tack moves to about 400-650 rpm when cranking. I checked the pick-up coil and it was reading no resistance so I replaced it, still doesnt start.

Re: Car just died.

does the 89 have the fuse in the engine compartment by the battery like my 87 does.. I know if that fuse is blown it gives power to the ECM.. I use that as a way to disable my car so the wife can't drive it.. It is attached to the inner fender almost behind the battery if yous has that.

Re: Car just died.

Sorry, it been a while. I threw a rod thro my oil pan in my 82 camaro. I now need this car running. After replace the pick up coil, i thought it wont start. I checked all power to ECU to fuel injector, also check all the wires to the ECU. After all that I FINNALLY got it to start but barely. I cant unhook the tan/black wire to set the timing on the car it just falls over and dies and wont start untill i plug it in. Any clues? Car runs good at 20 degree with computer in.

Re: Car just died.

if it wont run with the est wire unhooked it sounds like the timing is way off, when u plug that wire in it advances the timing, unplug the est wire and check the timming with a timming light to verify were it is with the est wire unhooked

Re: Car just died.

I just went out and tried again. I can get it to start but then once i unplugged the bypass it just shuts off. With the bypass i get about 25 degrees btdc timing. I'm going to pull a plug tomorrow and re time it.

Re: Car just died.

Alright. I think the pick up coil was bad. I can now get the car to idle but whenever I give it throttle it just back fire. the timing at 10 degree with bypass unplugged whenever i plug bypass in it will die or not start. any ideas?

Re: Car just died.

Took the ignition module and got it tested. It failed. Bought a new one, still doing it. If you give it any throttle it will back fire.

Re: Car just died.

Okay, I forgot got to put the snap ring on that holds the pick up coil down. Its a little loose you can move it around up and down. Would this cause all the back firing?? I'm going to fix it tonight.

Re: Car just died.

it could reasemble it unhook the est bypass and set timing to 10* and see what happens , if its still backfiring u may have 2 plug wires crossed up, or u have a plug wire arcing from one wire to another.

btw is it backfiring out the ex system or the intake manifold

ex = late timing or rich
intake = really early spark or really lean

Re: Car just died.

When I took the distributor out to replace the pick up coil. When I was trying to pull the shaft out " i think" I moved maybe the magnetic points thing. I said **** and spent 130 bucks on a new distributor and it fired right up. The car drives way different and a lot smother. I think this been going out for 3 months or so. Thanks for the helping guys. Now time to put a sbc 350 in my 82 camaro after throwing a rod thro the oil pan.
