*NEED SOME HELP* valve adjustments 3.1

ok i got 88 with 91 3.1..replaced head gaskets and rods and new hydro lifters and having trouble adjusting valves..after 0 lash.. is it 1/2 3/4 or 1 1/2 turns?? one manuel says 3/4 and all data manuel says 1 1/2 ? i did 3/4 and it sounded loose when u get on it like a rattle?! and 1 1/2 felt to tight like made my motor jerk and shake and wont go past 75 mph...whats wrong here? i also had a low oil reading changed the pump and 2 sensors on the block and still reads a quarter insted of 40 (even) ? gauge bad?

thanks for input or help

i just did head gaskets on my brothers 90 3.1L last week lol. and i went by the book and did 3/4 turn after 0 lash (wasnt very easy to figure when i had 0 lash), so it wasnt very cut and dry for me, seemed to be a gray area....but after first run around town for an hour or so, everything seem great. well today i actually just went out to move his car out of the way, and now its got a very loud tap. so i dont know when im going to get back around to his car to tear back into it. so i think either a lifter may have collapsed after shut down last week

get the valve to be closed. Then twist the pushrod and tighten the nut at the same time untill it just barly moves(zero lash). Then tighten a additional 1/2-5/8 turn. (my book says 3/4 but thats too much in my mind) I alwasy turn mine 1/2 turn extra after zero lash and have done that on many occations and never had loose lifters. But my zero lash may be different then someone elses.

Once you do all the rockers make sure to go back over them one by one and adjust a hair if needed. Keep in mind that if there over tightened that can cause some problems.
I see your sig says turboe V6 in ohio??????

BUT !!!!

Even I know that NO damn cam lobes went wearin off WITH THE ENGINE STOPPED !!!!!

I'm not lookin to mess with ya here , but that explaination just sounded SO out there , , , there is no mechanical wear happening in a not rotating engine . Period . Now , the lobe coulda wore down while the engine WAS running , and the tap wasn't noticed till the next cold start , sure , i"ll buy that . But if ya ever have the lobes wearin off of a stopped engine's cam , ya'll need an Exorcist and not a mechanic , cause yer engine's done gone and got itself haunted

no ****??? damn i thought i knew what i was talking about for second lol. c'mon now, obviously its not going to do a whole lot of anything sitting still. i was talking more along the lines of an over adjusted rocker arm lifter (not enough to hang a valve open) but enough to bottom lifter out and wear the CAM LOBE during the hour long test DRIVE, and while that could be happening the lifter would just pump up with oil during the drive to compensate for the wear. then shut it down, oil bleeds out, now lifter couldnt pump back up on next start up cold, hence leaving the loud tapping noise from excessive clearance made....idk it was a small suggestion when i originaly typed that without putting a ton of thought into it.

Re: *NEED SOME HELP* valve adjustments 3.1

1. ALLData is mostly wrong (actually, incomplete in most respects), IMHO. Although, they use the factory book a good portion of the time, and the factory book is for NEW lifters that are EMPTY of oil.
2. CLEAN OFF THE PUSHRODS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO SET VALVES. You can't get a good grip on the pushrods to feel when zero lash has been obtained with grimy rods.
3. Contrary to what a lot of the books say, the lash is checked by VERTICAL PLAY, not spinning the rods.
4. I generally use zero lash plus 5/8 turn. I used to do 1/2 turn, but either that wasn't enough or my rocker nuts came loose after a while.

I still think it's rather dumb that our engines go by number of turns past zero play instead of the way the 4-bangers do it, torque on the nut.
