Cam instillation and resulting gains (3.1)
Cam instillation and resulting gains (3.1)
I'm just trying make my car faster to keep up with my friends B18 Honda that dynod 170/110 if I remember right, his car pulls u back in the seat an would kill my car with it's vtec. So I think im looking for about 40 or 20whp more hp out of my 92' 3.1 liter to make my car pull as hard as his
I've seen a guy around town who has a probably 2000 v6 bird. It seems fast and it's so loud we tell him to turn his car off from idling. I think he said it's like that from having a bigger cam. It's super lopey... Right now i'm stock with a Jasper rebuilt engine at probly 150k on body / 50k on engine possibly.
So my questions are...

So my questions are...
- How much gain from a cam upgrade
- is there any cam a person with almost zero knowledge of engine work could put in?
- Can I just go on summit an order the cam; or would I need gaskets etc?
- If I went with a cam that made my car have the most gains, gas milage, tune?

Cam upgrade (with a tune) from my personal experience=10-20Hp max. Port the living outta of the heads and mabey 20-30Hp max. IMO 30Hp though is wishful thinking though but is possible. Every car is difference along with every tune. SO no one can really tell you youll gain xx Hp from a cam upgrade.
You can do it if you just read up on it and be carful
Buy a delta260 grind cam. Its less $$ and just as good as any one from summit, yes you need to but other items such as gaskets, and fresh valve springs. Deltacams.com the 260grind is 120 bucks with the lifters included.
If you want to retain the steetablility/gas milage you need to tune it. Tuning it will also allow you to have the best Hp gain. You have speed density like me so a tune is somthing i would highly recommend.
On a side note I ported the crap outta my heads and installed a delta 260grind cam a year ago. Noticed a huge gain in top end power. Droped 0-60Mph times from 10 seconds to high 7 sec range to low 8 sec. I did tune it though as best as I could as I was just starting out then. IIRC I only had about 300 bucks involved in my cam/heads. I also replaced the timing chain/set.

depending on your experience level, it might be easier to go with a performance exhaust and some steep rear gears. these mods would help your car go quicker and complement a cam change later. just a thought.
some N20 will get ya some HP/TQ for $400.oo too!
all good advice and probobal numbers above.

Some thoughts and very thankful for both your post as I've been learning this.
so I was thinking. If I went with the Delta cam, (thanks for posting prices) I could possibly slip that 10-20 hp out of it. Then maybe throw on some Pace setter headers for (250$) an later get a catback exhaust as mentioned from rneckjoe. Mind you I have no idea on tuning a car i've tried to learn an it is very complicated probly beyond my means an noone in my small town is gonna do it, so that's not a option. 3 seconds 0-60 seems like it would be a huge differance in my car esp since my engine is rebuilt. so if i gave this a try installing a cam with lifters... Relisticly this car should be as fast as a 305 maybe the b18? My friends b18 litterly had me sucked in the seat but his was also a vtech manuel driven...

So with a 260 delta cam, an maybe a better cai, I could net maybe from 140 stock hp to 160 hp, then with header get 170 hp, then exhaust 185 and be feeling like im pushing 15's from 18's stock.. i believe in both my firebirds 0-100 mph is 18 sec. So maybe I could get 0-100 in 14 sec... just from those mods. Idk tho i'm still learning. If you think differently please let me know. Or if you know a cheaper / faster way of building for less cost. All this without tune mind you.. Nitrous doesn't seem like a good idea cus it doesn't seem like it last long and probly cost to refill it. Thanks for helping!

I dont think youll get a 0-100mph like you want with those mods. Im sorry to say it, unless you do other mods. You will be hard pressed to ever get high 15's outa that 3.1L without either getting a very high compression ratio, n20, a turbo, or making it a hybrid. Im not saying it cant be done as its really easy to make them fast, just takes a little research and learning from others, that made it there.
Ive heard others say they could get 15's but never seen proof of it unless they did those mods i listed above to get them there. Im just one who likes to see proof for preformance outcomes.

0-100 on a stock automatic or even a stick 3.1L thirdgen is more like 25 seconds.
Click my Sig video and thats what a 12 second 0-100mph looks like on the street and thats arround 275-300hp all day.
Nitrous is crack for cars, but will put you where you want to be with little experience with them. Just is hard on engines if your not too familiar with it. But this is the cheepest way to make any car faster!!
Heres that 0-60mph with just a cam and ported heads. In this video it wasent even tuned for WOT yet. I would bet I was a mid low mid 16 second car after I tuned it but never got to run it at the track before I started my turbo build. So its just a guess. FYI this car went 16.7-17.10's depending on the air before I ever touched the engine. Just had cut alot of weight off, learned how to launch it at the track, and added a muffler and cat.
about 7-8 seconds.

Re: Cam instillation and resulting gains (3.1)
I think I've built the most modded naturally aspirated IRON HEAD 3.1 on here. (there are others with aluminum heads that are faster). I had a big cam, almost 11:1 compression, ported heads, headers, custom intake plenum/manifold, custom y-pipe, high stall tq convertor, built tranny, posi and 3.73 gears and only managed a 14.97 @89.95 mph. The car was quick for what it was but it still got beat by many stock cars (with bigger engines, of coarse). Definitely fun and different but not super fast. there's a pic of that time slip floatin around here somewhere. also, I've got a video on youtube of a 15.13 pass. didn't get the 14.97 on video, of course.
