Still trying to fix a problem
A long story short, I have a 1990 Firebird, 3.1, standard stuff. My car was running great, and just died right out of the blue. The engine would barely turn over, sputter for a bit, and quit.
After the installs of a new fuel pump, fuel system, all of the tune up measures including the MAP sensor and idle air control valve, injectors, a PROM, 02...well, I'm still in the same boat.
I got it today, and it ran pretty good driving it home. Then it died at home, while just idling and getting rid of the old gas.
While trying again to get her running, I disabled the connector from the alternator. It actually idled good. As soon as I connected the plug, the engine died. I've been told the alternator puts out 14 volts, but the voltage generator is bad. Then I looked at the connection, and it was melted a tiny bit.
Could it be that the problem the entire time was just that plug into the alternator?

Re: Still trying to fix a problem
You mentioned "old gas". Had your car been sitting for a long time before all the problems started?
The alternator will put out as much voltage as is required. You should take it off and have it tested, just to rule that out. That may have something to do with a melted connection. Also have the battery tested, just for peace of mind.
Check all of your battery cables, alternator cables, any of those connections for any sort of corrosion. It sounds like you have some sort of a charging problem.

Re: Still trying to fix a problem
Finally, after 3 different mechanics, and talking to a friend of mine, I'm happy to say my Firebird is running normal. Just about everything involving the fuel system and various sensors were replaced. My friend had told me he had filled up at a gas station while they were getting a delivery and the sediment got mixed in to his fuel system.
One of these days I'll have the money to return my Firebird to pristine condition.

Did you have the fuel pump replaced or fuel tank worked on at all? What specifically did you have replaced? Just because a friend had bad fuel from a station doesn't mean you did. I'm just curious to know what you had done and at what point it got running again. Details help everyone!
