ok so my car still doesn't have a working speedometer but I took the ECM out of a 1990 rs like mine with a V6. Now heres the questions will this ECM work in mycar because the 1990 didn't have cruise and mine does and another question ive ordered a new gauge cluster that's coming in tomorrow and if the speedometer still doesn't work I know it could be the gear inside the transmission because ive already changed the sender unit on the side of the transmission so how do you get to the gear inside the transmission and please don't tell me I have to drop the trans. and no the odometer or tripometer work either and the cruise doesn't either

 

Cruise control is off a vac from the engine with a diapgram, a cable and some other items but im pretty certain that is does NOT matter if the ecm had cruise or not.

 

Is the ECM setting a code 25? If not, the issue is somewhere between the ECM and the cruise module and instrument cluster. Code 25 basically means that the ECM isn't receiving the 4000 PPM pulses from the sensor in the transmission, so if that's being set, the issue is somewhere between the VSS and the ECM.

 

You mean 24 for the vss, 25 is for the mat high temperature.

 

 

ok im only 18 so how do you check to see if its setting that code i know that some cars have a computer hook up but i dont think ours do. And an update i got the new speedometer in today speedo still doesnt work but according to my dad he gunned it out on the road and the gauge went up to 10mph but slowly sank back down to 0. ive also checked the speedometer gear inside the trans, the sensor, and the gears inside there all fine.

 

To scan your trouble codes, turn the key to the "ON" position, but do not start the vehicle. You can buy a scanner, or use a paper clip, to check the codes. You will be looking for a black, rectangular plug, under the steering column, in your dash. The scanner will automatically ground the correct terminals, so if you can pick one up use it. If you are using a paper clip, you will need to locate the "A" and "B" terminals(yes, the plastic is stamped and the letters may still be visible). Connect the paper clip to those two terminals. You should hear your cooling fan kick on, and you'll notice the check engine light begin to flash. The flashes will be intermittent.

The first code you will see, is code "12", or distributor reference pulse. This is a default code, as the distributor is not firing(the engine is not running), and no signal is read by the ECM. To decipher the codes, you will notice the SES light flashes one time, waits about 1-2 secs, and then flashes 2 times. It will do this, and every stored code a total of 3 times. There will be an approximate 3-5 sec delay, between codes. After code 12 has flashed 3 times, if your VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) is defective, you will see the SES light flash, quickly, 2 times, have a 1-2 sec delay, and then flash 4 times fast.

Essentially, the number of flashes are similar to a very basic form of Morse Code.

If you see the light flash 6x, pause, and flash 1 time, pause, flash 6x, etc....
then you know you have a code "61", or contaminated oxygen sensor.


If the VSS is sending to the ECM, properly, and the guage cluster does not correct the problem, the the next step wil involve checking all the wiring, for a broken/shorted wire.

Ok sorry it took so long to replie but I was getting the error codes 24 and 33 but I have replaced the speed sensor and the mass air flow I kno whats wrong there because I changed out the air intake but the error code 24 is what's getting me any ideas of what it could be
