Need help,

I'm new to working on cars and I have had some experience repairing this car, but I am getting EGR code failure and Map sensor code from check engine. Also The car is idling high (1250 rpms) and rough. Also I replaced the thermostat and the gauge doesn't work now and I replaced the distributor cap and rotar and it makes a zap noise when starting up and every now and then it takes a few times to get it started. Help? I am new to the F body camaro family and I'm trying to fix up mine and learn as much as possible about the third gen f body camaro because I have a great interest in them.

Seriously not being a jerk here, but have you looked at the egr and map sensor, since ecm is complaining about them?
The car will run like poop with a bad map sensor....

Re: Need help,

The MAP sensor will be connected to the intake or a vacuum line, probably looks like:

Bad EGR shouldn't affect the engine nearly as much. I'm not familiar with the EGR on these engines but the valve will be on the exhaust somewhere and a solenoid connected somehow to that to control it.

Edit: Your sig says you have an 84 Camaro with the 2.8 but according to my manual an 84 shouldn't have a MAP sensor since it uses a MAF normally to meter fuel.

Re: Need help,

It's a carbed car... It would be surprising if it DIDN'T have a MAP sensor. It may also have a second sensor for barometric correction (later V8s do, anyways). Carbs can't use a MAF. Keep in mind that port injection was used starting in 85... Everything before that was either TBI or carbureted.

The MAP may be on the bracket by the brake booster or on another bracket near the cowl. It's a rectangular box with a green plug in the bottom of it. The wires are black, gray, and green.

And yes, an EGR failure will cause some real issues, especially with starting, if the valve is stuck open. The EGR valve looks kind of like a UFO from the top, with a vacuum line in the top. The underside of the hood should have an emissions sticker on it and also an "Emissions Hose Routing" sticker. Use the hose routing sticker to find out where everything is (since pretty much all of us here are fuel injected and don't have much info on the carbed stuff).

Re: Need help,

Can you show me an image? So it's by the brake booster, what about the map sensor?

Re: Need help,

Again, if your car still has it, look at the emissions hose sticker. It will tell you roughly where the MAP and EGR parts are. The MAP MAY be by the brake booster or somewhere else on the cowl, but the EGR parts WILL be on the engine somewhere.
