1991 Chevrolet Camaro 3.1L

My mechanic told me that my ECM needs to be replace. He says that it was cracked and that was causing to it run shitty and the reason for my loss of power. My question is, has anyone tried the BlueStreak Electronics Remanufactured ECM from Pep Boys? The ECM cost $65 with a core charge

1. No such animal as a cracked ECM. Your guy is yanking your chain because he can tell you don't know enough to know he has no idea WTF he's talking about.
2. You can go to a junkyard and get a 1227730 for $20-30, they're all over the place. And the reman probably isn't much better than what you would get at a yard. You can also shop eBay. Or, I just happen to have one complete with bracket.

But I can guarantee that your problem probably has nothing to do with the ECM being bad.

Re: 1991 Chevrolet Camaro 3.1L

Well, what EXACTLY is it doing?

Was the fuel pressure tested?

Were the coolant temp and air intake temp sensors tested?

Vacuum test done?

Voltage tested on the output wire for the MAP and TPS?

Was the ignition coil replaced? What about the plug wires? PCV valve? Oxygen sensor?

Results of the compression test? Should be around the 160 PSI range.

What did the plugs look like when they came out?

Re: 1991 Chevrolet Camaro 3.1L

A "broken" ECM would not cause it to run on only a few cylinders, it would cause it to either run on all of them or not at all. The injectors are what is known as "batch fire" where all of the injectors fire at the same time, and the 3.1 ECM, a 1227730, has only one injector driver.

You have bad injectors, bad plugs, bad plug wires, a bad ICM, or a problem with fuel delivery, or possibly a voltage problem.

Tell the mechanic that said cracked ECM to either put the pipe down or share what he's smoking.
