2.8 v6 not revving past 500

hey guys, just finished installing my rebuilt 2.8 v6 earlier today
its a 1984 model with the 2bbl electronic carb

using the original carb with new electronic distributor
mods are:
raised compression from 8.5 to 9.5
crane cam H-272-2
pace setter headers
minor head porting and intake matched to heads
bigger intake/exhaust valves
and a high volume oil pump

anyway, it started up for the first time after a few seconds cranking and giving a bit of throttle, but only revved to 500 and stayed there, even at full throttle..
i started it 3 times and shut it off after the rpms weren't raising, maybe 20-30 seconds total run time
oil pressure was around 60psi, so hoping i havent damaged the cam...

the carb was working fine when it was pulled off, i have no idea why it doesn't want to accelerate
does anyone know what might be wrong? something inside the carb maybe?
it was sitting for maybe 6 months.. can this cause damage to it?

any advice helps, cheers.

500 RPM isnt even idle speed. Not to sound like a jerk, but do you have the throttle cable hooked up? Were you opening the throttle with the pedal or by hand under hood? When you bring the RPMs up, does it stumble/run different/etc? There should be some change since you are bringing more air at least by opening the throttle plates.

That little bit shouldn't have damaged the cam...

yes of course the throttle cable is connected and with my foot down the carb opens fully

at full throttle it runs, but the tach only goes up to 500rpm, if i take my foot off it dies

Re: 2.8 v6 not revving past 500

You definitely have a fuel delivery problem. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up? Check your pressure. When you crank it or when it starts, does it seem to start smoothly or is there any hesitation to start, popping, etc?

You might also want to ask a mod to move this into the carb section where it can get more eyes on it w/ people who know more about this issue. no offense to anyone in here

Re: 2.8 v6 not revving past 500

ok so...i undid the bolts on the top plate of the carb, and lifted it up just enough to be able to remove the accelerator pump and the float, the rubber on the accelerator pump is destroyed, as is the rubber seal on the mixture control solenoid.. and somehow a fair amount of fine sand like dirt has gotten all up inside the bowl... im assuming this is causing the problem....
before all this i had taken the internal fuel filter out of the carb and put one on before the mechanical fuel pump,
i assumed a new out of the box pump would be clean, but apparently not...

is it worth it to try and rebuild this thing?
