Car starts then stalls
Car starts then stalls
Hello, I have a 1984 2.8l v6 camaro sport, two days ago I was driving home and a wire came loose from the battery and all the lights started to dim and the battery voltage dropped to about 8volt ( according to my voltage gage...aftermarket) I pulled over and reconnected the wire and got a jump and that's when the problem first happened, it started and ran for about 5-10 seconds and then stalled out, I started it again and it ran long enough for me to get in and start driving, about 30 seconds later I went to make a turn and it just died. I was able to get it home if I kept on the gas and didn't let off. I went out the next morning and it was doing the same thing, I opened up the air cleaner and the filter and housing where covered in a light coat of oil. I cleaned up the carburator and left the air cleaner assembly off and tried it that way, it started and died unless I kept on the gas, but when I came off the gas it would fight to not die. I have no idea what it could be, I read that the pvc valve could be the problem that it's blocked and air can't flow threw it but I don't know, I really need help. I have some knowledge of cars but this is my first carburated one. Any suggestions or anything would be greatly appreciated
Re: Car starts then stalls
What would cause the oil in the air cleaner, and how would I know if the fuel filter is clogged, wouldn't it not be able to keep the car running if it was that restricted ?

I'm not familiar with the '84 V6 but it seems like the PCV might be a likely culprit for the oily air cleaner.

Okay so I replaced the pcv valve and grommet, but I still don't know what would be causing this to happen, how would a check for a vacuum leak at the carburator or the intake manifold. And where is the fuel filter at on the car. I read in my Haynes manual that it's in line by the carburator but I can't find anything at all that I believe is the fuel filter. I read about a faulty ECM and it needing to be reset. I didn't know if maybe the car needing to be jumped messed something with that up and If I have to reprogram it but I don't know. It's hard to determine if jumping the car did start this problem or if it's just coincidence. If the car was being cranked with the battery to dead to actually start it is it possibly that that did something to cause this problem. I'm just trying to go through everything and see what should be done first that's simplest so I don't go replacing a whole bunch of parts that were fine to begin with
