I have an 87' 2.8 v6 I've had this car for over a month. It's not in too bad of shape for the year model trying to work out some of its problems...

I noticed the fuel pump can make a kind of loud sound you could say it sounds like Darth Vader's fighter plane. It still seems to be working OK but I've read that could be a sign that it's going out! So I'm going to work with replacing it in time before it does. From what I've read i'm going to make a trap door instead of dropping the rear end. Use shears to cut out the panel my main concern is cutting the fuel lines to get the pump out. I know you definitely don't want any sparks or Kaboom! Looking for advice from people who have done it. I've read people using a hacksaw to cut the fuel lines maybe going real slow as you make the cuts

 

I just used tin snips, then reshape the end with pliers. Make sure you hard wire in the new FP, DO NOT use the plastic quick connect they provide. As the new pump doesn't plug in, you have to splice it in. Twist connect the wires.

Gas is what cools the FP, so if someone ran it low all the time it can go quicker.

I just used SS covered FI hose to splice lines back, wit hdouble hose clamps on the ends. If you need to make a sharp bend and the hose wants to kink, put hose clamps in the bend to make it stay round and flow well.

Id did the door also, glad so, I was back in there a few times. Much easier to do with a hole.

Don't cut a hole in the car. Its really not that difficult to remove the tank, just takes time.

What did you use to cut the steel lines with? What do you think is a reliable fuel pump? I think the trap door is the way to go just do a nice neat job if you can

 

I used tin snips to cut the hard line, then used pliers to reshape back open. I got my pump from autozone.

 

NO STOP..Your pump is not going out . Stock pumps last 200xxx .at least mines .still going strong. Check you vacuum lines from the charcoal canister to the throttle body. Thats were your problem is. Easy fix . Inspect the valve and canister.

 

There is a valve on the back of the intake the hose was deteriated and the line ran to the canister it wasn't plugged into anything. I couldn't figure out where it plugged into I replaced the hose and then plugged the line until I figure out what to do with it...

 

Im not sure on the 2.8 but on my 3.1 the hose from the canister goes to one of the holes on top of the throttle body. The othe hole on the tb conects to the fpr and smog pump via a t fitting. The holes on the back of my intake .one is for the map sensor. And the smaller one goes to the vaccum ball by the battery.

 

if ur going to cut an access dorr do it the right way, not like that mess in the pictures posted , also do not use tin snips or a hacksaw on the lines , goto the hardware store and buy a 5$ tubing cutter

 

I plan on buying a tube cutter flaring kit...the way the steel lines are bunched together I don't know if you can get a tube cutter on them. I bought a OEM service manual i'll see if I can use it to trace the vacuum lines and make sure that's not the problem. I will still work with making a access panel so it will be ready if I ever need to replace the fuel pump

 

no room for a tubing cutter, even a mini one, trust me I tried, on the metal to avoid cutting anything needed I used an air chisel. noisy, gotta straighten the endges some but it makes for a tight fit when its going back as no material was removed.

 

mini tubing cutter fits just fine i have an access door in mine, the other few thousand ppl on this site that have access doors says the mini tubing cutter works as well
