V6 Camaro owners, got a question...

So, apparently us Bird guys lucked out and every single one of us has the battery on the driver's side. Problem with that? Cable length AND the fact that nobody makes replacements for when the battery eventually eats the tray.

I'd like to move my battery over to the other side. I think my cables are shot, for one, and for 2, if I need to eventually, I'd like to be able to replace the tray. Problem with that is I can't just go out and grab a set of cables since most yards around here have crushed pretty much everything that is older than OBDII. And my work schedule is such that I can't get out there anyways.

So, what I am asking is this. I need to know the length of your battery cables, from the battery to the starter and battery to engine block (I don't believe they're in the GM parts catalog anymore). Speaking of which, I need to know where the negative cable mounts to the block. Because, if my alternator bracket (keep in mind I have a 3.4 alternator bracket) is in the way of the cable mount, I'll need a longer cable.

It's a copper wire. I'm not understanding your prob here.

Go buy 10' or so of 1/0 welding cable from a welding supply shop and a few copper crimp on lugs and you will have a much better battery cable set than any factory car has ever had, and you can route the wires anyway you want and place your ground anywhere on the block.

Mine is a V8 street/strip car but I used 1/0 welding cable to relocate my battery to the rear.

And then what do I do for the junction block where pretty much everything that isn't fed off of the starter solenoid gets power? I'll stay with the stock style stuff and not have to deal with corrosion on the battery terminal ends, seeing as how they have rubber jackets...

Anyone else have an answer?

I looked at the dealer and yes, the cables are still in the catalogs... Ridiculous prices even with discount... 35" sound right? Still asking for where negative cable connects if it's not 4 o clock on the damper...

There should be a bolt hole on the passenger side of the block for the neg battery wire to bolt to. If you still havent found where it goes, PM me, and I will take as many photos as I can of mine so you can see where the stuff goes in Camaros vs Firebirds.

It's too dark for me to get pictures now, but I'll be outside tomorrow working on my car. I'll get pictures of the wire routes and measurements for you.

Can't get at my engine, too much snow and I don't own any snow excavation tools.

If you change what side the battery is on, what are you doing with the charcoal canister?

P.S. TBI Birds actually have the battery on the passenger side... go figure.

Re: V6 Camaro owners, got a question...

Don't tell the emissions guys but my canister is for show only... MegaSquirt doesn't control it and 99% of the time there are no hoses running to it. So I can just move it to the other side as I please. And use a breather filter on the vent hose. I have a couple cut up wiring harnesses I can steal the connector from and just tape it to the part of the harness I have running to the washer bottle pump to make it look like it's connected to something.

:edit: As I said before, the bolt holes which would be for the AIR pump bracket (if I had one) are off limits for the negative cable mount. My alternator bracket covers one and it and my crank position sensor (DIS) are bolted to the lower hole. Guess the cables are going to have to be custom made... Unless I tap one of the unused A/C compressor mount holes in the bracket for the negative cable... Hmmm...
