2.8 misfire and backfire

Ok guys another problem to solve. I think I already know what it is but need your help once again.

So here's what's new so you don't bark up the wrong tree:

Coil
Rotor arm
Dizzy cap
Leads
Plugs
Reconditioned injectors

Yesterday fired it up, timed it up and it ran on all 6 cylinders, no problem at all.

First thing this morning fired it up and lots of backfiring and general noise. Traced it to cylinder 2 (front on driver side).

Lead sparking
Plug sparking
Plug covered in fuel

So that leaves compression right? Valves or head gasket?

No oil in water, no water in oil, no loss of coolant.

So where do I go from here?? HELP!!

Have you done a compression test? Replace the plug with a non fouled plug and see how it goes. Once a plug is fouled they sometimes never fire properly again.

No Six, tomorrow's job is compression test. As far as I can guess it's either a faulty injector or the head gasket but I'm open to any advice. I'll report back once I've done a test on all the cylinders. Thanks.

Re: 2.8 misfire and backfire

Have you tried new spark plug wires? Also its a must to replace spark plugs if they have gone bad. They will not get better. I recommend always changing spark plugs with wires. Sometimes even bad wires can cause faults in spark plugs and they will stay faulty. What i have learned is that spark plugs and wires go hand to hand. If one of them fails, the other one is failed as well even if new.

Did you even read my first post?!!! Yes the plugs and leads are new along with the rotor arm and dizzy cap.

I've also swapped out the faulty plug with every single one of the old leads and it's exactly the same.

Re: 2.8 misfire and backfire

Gota say id check that injector is working right bud, if it was me. But another quick check would be try running the car with maff disconected and see if it makes any difference.

Also check the codes on the computer might tell you, its easy enough to do with a paperclip, theres a tech on this site somewhere on how to do it.
Keep us posted.

Ok, thanks. I think we're gonna go through everything this morning and see where it takes us. I had considered a faulty injector but I guess we won't know until later on. I'll let you know. Wish me luck, I'll give ANYTHING no to have to tear this down again!!

Re: 2.8 misfire and backfire

Well, it's crisis averted. It turned out the spark plug on cylinder 1, despite being brand new, has broken down with under an hours use and is sparking to the base, not the electrode. Took two people to see it though!! Phew! What a relief.

New plugs tomorrow!!
