92 RS dies when I put it in gear
92 RS dies when I put it in gear
I have a 92 Camaro RS 3.1 L 5 speed manual transmission.
Out of nowhere (going up an onramp) it started to die. It would idle fine, but as soon as I would give it some gas or put it in gear, it would die. If I let it sit more than a day, it won’t start and takes some starting fluid to get it fired up. Once fired up, I have to flutter the gas to keep it running. If I flutter the gas right, I can get it up to higher RPM’s in neutral. But now it doesn’t idle well nor will it run if I try to put it in gear and go anywhere.
I've read a couple other posts of similar problems but I'm not sure I'm having the same issue. I don’t believe it’s the fuel pump. I can hear it hum every time I start the car and I’ve pulled the gas line and watched it pump gas. I’ve changed the fuel filter and tried a new MAP sensor. I pulled off the distributer cap and spark plugs and everything looks to be in order (no cracks or dust.)
Anyone have any guesses?
Thank you so much!

is your check engine light on?
If it is, get your codes.
Maybe gigantic vacuum leak?
Do you still have a catalytic converter? Is it original? If so, and it's clogged, you won't get air out of the motor to get more air into it.

No check engine light and no codes stored (I started there).
I do have the original catalytic converter on there. I can check that.

Hi there,
If it's idling that bad, it might be the IAC valve is clogged. Since you have no codes, the IAC may be functional, but the air passages might be full of carbon deposits. You can try taking the throttle body off and using some TB cleaner to clear out the passages. Clean off the TB butterfly too. That all should help your idling, and maybe get a little better gas mileage too!

If the original MULTEC injectors are still in the engine replace them. They fail by the coils shorting out, which by now they have to be.

Thank you all for your help thus far!
Update: So far I have changed:
Fuel filter
Map Sensor
IAC
Throttle position sensor
Although it is running and idling a bit better, the engine still dies as soon as I put it into gear.
I've never tried replacing injectors. I'll try that next.

Turns out, it was the fuel pump. After replacing all the above mentioned items, I finally gave up and took it to the shop. Even though it was getting a little bit of fuel, it wasn't getting nearly enough.
Thank you all for your input.
