How much would the coil, cap and rotor cost? Could you buy it at an auto zone or do you have to order it from summit or jegs? I have never changed this and I want to!

What do you guys think about ACCELs after-market coil? Good or bad? LIke you said I can get it at AutoZone right now or should I order the MSD from Summit? I can do either one but if you guys say that the ACCEL one is just as good, then I am going to go that route.

Yes I realise Ac-Delco is GM, but often it is fairly cheap like welds...

Replacing a coil that works is like flushing $40 down the toilet.
The stock ignition system can handle more power than a 2.8 or 3.1 will ever produce without a power adder.

It might not be working at it peak power. Any yes I know and everyone else he knows that the stock ignition is ENOUGH for a V8. Why do I always find myself thinking Drew is more of a troll than anything?

I don't know why...? Too much work?

Drew, an aftermarket coil will increase high-RPM power. Coil saturation drops as RPMs increase, and with more windings (as found in the MSD or Accel) coils, more spark is produced. While the advertisements of "45,000 volt coil" are misleading (you won't get 45kV at 5500 RPM), you'll still get more spark with aftermarket than stock. And Monkie's right (about the stock HEI for V8's, not about the Tuneup)

bosh platinum or ac delco's , Delco's are cheaper , but if you do alot of interstate driving where put it to the floor to pass some when you are all ready going fast .Go with Bosh .I've cracked two ac delco's at the insulater because of lugging it , trying to pass someone.I will tell you I have not driven on my Bosh's yet , but I will be putting them in .However , they feel heavier and feel like their better quality and seem they would stand up to that lugging sometimes .

STAY AWAY FROM -splitfires and accel !

I find that if you do alot of driving just around the city and hwy , just go with some 7mm wires from Carquest , or get AC delco's .I just took my carquest 7mm wires off because they were not lasting with my high speed driving on the interstate .I could not figure out why I was just eating these wires for breakfast and lunch lately when 3 years ago in highschool they would last one me .In highschool I seldom drove on the interstate .Anyway , those 7mm ac delcos or carquest just don't last but a year with the highspeed interstate driving and you if planning on going to the track some .I have some accel 8mm wires (Universal set) I put on my car today .You can get the Universal Accel wires at prabably pretty much any Discount Auto Parts , pep-boys . My point is , I appologize for the lenght of this , dunno why but Im long winded tonight ...If you drive for 20 min or longer on interstate or even just lug your car alot go with some good 8mm accel , Jacobs , Mallary . Samething with the sparkplugs , bosh if you drive under these interstate and "lug it to pass" conditions alot .

p.s. You can also order custom fit accel , etc 8mm to fit your car so you dont have to make them .If you plan on picking up a universal set to make them , pick up a crimper tool while your there , I got one for $10.99 , you can make them with a razor blade , but I love the crimper tool ! These expensive wire sets LAST !

Well for once, I disagree with you, Wayne! (About time, eh? ) I've used Splitfires since 1994, with one "incident" trying the Accel u-groove plugs. I've never had trouble with them. The spark doesn't split in a "Y" like the commercials seem to say... the point of the design is to expose more spark to the cylinder (like a cut plug). People have complained about oil-soaked plugs; I've never had one. I think they installed the wrong heat range of plug for their motor (which will cause an oily plug for any spark plug!). My exhaust seems to smell cleaner with the Splitfires than with AC's, so that's worth it for me.

Tip: Don't buy them from local stores- Splitfire "officially" dropped the retail price of their original Splitfires to $3.99/plug, and their platinum Splitfires went from $9.95 to $6.95. Local stores don't follow this, and still charge the original pricing!! Screw 'em, go with Summit Racing like I do. I even called Splitfire about Pep Boys; the guy at Splitfire was annoyed- but the price at Pep Boys never changed.

But I do agree on the Accel plugs "warning": For me, the Accel's brass terminal for the plug wire kept unscrewing from the plug, becoming loose, and causing a misfire. I went back to the store and checked other plug sets; all had the same problem, as did some people on thirdgen.org - hopefully Accel's fixed that by now.

For Splitfire? 88-up 2.8/3.1 is an SF2D, part # SPL-SF2D from Summit (per plug). This is for the original Splitfire plug, I don't know the platinum3 Splitfire number.
